The Orchard Foundation           The Orchard Foundation  WHY ARE YOU RICH? —Failing the Prosperity Test It has been said, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” Similarly, when you evaluate who you think is wealthy, it depends on your perspective. Publications and periodicals carry names like Fortune and Money to entice our reading and enhance our greed. Our human tendency is to compare ourselves to others—especially when we consider who is rich. No matter the extent of our resources, others are rich—not us! By every credible source, however, we live today in an era of unparalleled wealth. Whether compared to the Third World or to persons living in our nation’s poorer pockets, the average person has record amounts of disposable income. Yet, “the American church has largely failed the ‘test of prosperity’ during a century that has witnessed the greatest build-up of wealth in the history of man”, writes Greg Sperry of the National Christian Foundation. After decades of using the best techniques available, per capita charitable giving in the Western World is at record lows—less than 2% per household income. Yet one researcher recently confirmed that “religious persons give more of everything.” He even reported that the most generous group are evangelicals, whose giving is only about 3.5%. It would appear to me that God's Word focuses more on the generosity of believers in blessing those in need than on size of their wealth. God's Word is more interested in how believers give away their resources to build His kingdom than in the material prosperity of believers. Riches are not for the benefit of the wealthy, but for their generous distribution to meet God's call on their lives. God's gifts to us are not for our ownership benefit, but to further demonstrate His Lordship over every area of our lives. Jesus warned his disciples that “you cannot serve BOTH God and money.” (Matt. 6: 24). He was clear that there are not some super-spiritual among us who have it all figured out. We all struggle with the same fleshly tendencies as to what would be supreme in our lives. The potential harm of the ‘prosperity gospel’ is that it dilutes our life purpose as ‘servant-stewards’ and distracts our attention from God's ownership of all. The apostle Paul closed his instruction with a direct appeal: ”Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.
