The Society is a voluntary membership organization to promote Methodist history. It is affiliated with the General Commission on Archives and History, an official arm of The United Methodist Church, but welcomes everyone who is interested in studying and preserving the heritage of the various branches of the Methodist movement.

Membership
Membership in the HSUMC has many benefits and is a excellent way to stay in touch with the Methodist historical community. Membership is open to everyone who is interested in studying and preserving the heritage of the various branches of the Methodist movement. It includes subscriptions to Methodist History and Historian's Digest, and invitations to annual meetings and special events.

Annual Meeting
The Society holds an Annual Meeting, which includes special speakers, workshops, and tours of historic sites.
The 2007 meeting was held at the National 4-H Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland on July 20-22. Jointly sponsored with the General Commission on Archives and History and the Charles Wesley Society, this was a special celebration of the Charles Wesley tercentenary.

News and Notes
The Dakotas Archives and the History Commission and Dakota Wesleyan University will host the Historical Society’s 7th Annual Convocation in Mitchell, South Dakota. The event will take place at the George and Eleanor McGovern Library and Center for Leadership and Public Service on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University on July 7-10, 2008.
