SHAMANA BUDDHISM A BARBARIEN BODHISATTVA PATH
BY SYNOPHION
INTRODUCTION
Recently, many people have become interested in a more pragmatic 'darker' spirituality, an increasing reaction, to the superstitious, dogmatic, moralistic, politicaly correct, New Agey feminist, feel good, nicy nicy, tree huggy spirituality, that is so acceptable and prelevent in todays technological world, with its illusion's of safety and comfort. People are begining to seek beyond that safe artificiality, in an attempt to discover the real essence of our existence, without being lied to, or having those aspects of our lives, that are considered distastefull, swept under the carpet. It is a desire to experience the reality of existence in its totality, and accept its inevitability, thus feeling complete in oneself, and able to live ones life without fear.Due to a neurotic human denial of pain and the unpleasent, and a refusal to acknowledge that which we fear, many 'spiritual' seekers have become ensnared within philosophical affectations, that either seek to deny all pain, or overtly indulge it, as a reaction to that denial, fantasisingthat they can control the natural world itself [by divine or magical intervention], to satisfy such desires. This has lead to many an individual sinking deep into their own petty desires, andfinding themselves at the bottom of a very dark Abyss, struggling with a soul filled with despair and dissatisfaction, born of unrealised cravings. So hypnotised will they become by such needs, that they will begin to lose sight of themselves amidst the illusion of their own desires, be it for pleasure or pain, or both, so much so that the full implication of who we are, and the 'truth' of our existence will be destroyed in the light of that very same struggle. Throughout the ages, people have desperately sought after an understanding of themselves and the universe, for a sense of spiritual satisfaction, that would explain the contradictions and suffering we all have to endure, searching anxiously to discover a peace that will also endure throughout all of these difficulties. Many philosophers have arisen that have attempted to provide an escape from this overwhelming disatisfaction, and some have come very close to that 'truth'. But often these teachings would only cause more confusion and emptiness, when the desired benefits were unrealised, and people would become even more dejected and lost, than they had been previously. But within this Darkness is born a great hope, for occasionaly an individual will arise, who will spontaneously awake, without the need of a teacher. A being who will gain deep insight and wisdom, and know liberation. Many of these awakened ones, will remain silent, and will retire into the 'wilderness' [Pratteka Buddha]. Some will remain amongst us [Samma Buddha] and teach others, to look deep within themselves, for that very same liberation that they have come to know and understand. For this is where it truley lies, within the Self, not in any outer object, being, or even a Samma Buddha hirself. But humanity is generaly so distracted with things, prefering to crave something 'tangible' to grasp, that they rarely find time to look deep within that 'dark' silent womb within themselves, thus the birth of a Samma Buddha to encourage and point the way. But humanities constant craving to find external comforts, be it material power, ego, an external saviour or a universal mother or father, soon forces the great teaching [Logos or Dhamma] to slip into obscurity [as with all things], and be forgotten, awaiting yet another awakened one to arise, and re-establish the teaching, yet again. Yet, even though a Samma Buddha may present the teaching, for our benefit, only those who are ready to listen will respond to the message, for ultimately, all the greatest lessons are learnt through our own perseverance, and we will only hear what we are willing or capable of hearing. But the very teaching of a Buddha/Gnostic can be a great encouragement, and such a teaching can provide a 'shortcut', through the pending years of study and practice, and the many mistakes we may make, when on a solitary path. Are there any awakened ones amongst us today, this is for each individual to decide for themselves, and even though Bodhyrga especialy acknowledge the teaching of one particular Buddha/Gnostics who was born in northern India 2500yrs ago, called Siddartha Gotama, who's life and teaching we regard as the measure for which to assess all other teachings and Awakened Ones, we also recognise other Sarmana inspired teachers such as Mahavir and Epicurus, who's teachings not only compliment that of Gotama, but also give added insight into Gotamas words. Though each teacher was limited by the constraints of their own conditioning and culture, they were still able to present the teaching almost completely, to a people who would listen and cherish it.Gotama presented a vast body of teaching, as did Mahavir and Epicurus [who wrote approx 300 documents most now missing], though it seems he wrote nothing down, and left his teaching to the memory of his disciples, which was eventualy written down [as the Pali Nikayas], several hundred years after his death. Though much of the truth behind Gotamas words remains hidden amongst the superstition and dogma of modern day Buddhism, a comparison of all these works can reveal within the Nikaya documents a 'truth' and depth and profundity which has not been fully understood for 1500yrs So welcome to Bodhyrga, meaning 'Wisdom of the Awakened Ones' [Sk - Bodhi = Awakened One / Indo-European - Whryga = mystic wisdom], a new but very old Order, following a very old teaching, an inner spiritual tradition that is older than the cave paintings at Lascaux, which goes back to a time when humanity first crawled from the primal slime and stood squarely on hir own two feet, and is consistently being re-discovered through the aeons, by humanity. Bodhyrga does not claim to have an unbroken line of teachers or gurus, very few, if any tradition, can claim such a pure historical lineage, but we do claim 'membership' of the most ancient sramanic tradition, first revealed by Rishabha Buddha, who lived at the very begining of human development. Though we might describe ourselves as Buddhist, or even Gnostics [the western form], we do not hold to any modern school of Buddhism, as we consider the Northern Tradition of Buddhism [known as Mahayana] to have become contaminated with superstition and fantasy, and likewise we feel that Theravada has become equaly conaminated with inflexibility and dogmatism. We would more specificaly describe ourselves as Sarmana [a Greek transliteration of Sramana or shaman] Buddhists, and because we are unconventional, nonconformist, permissive and individual, and encourage such an outlook, we also embrace the labels Barbarien derived from the Greek Barbaros, meaning 'foreign, non-mainstream', and Tirthika, a label that is not acceptable in Buddhist circles, as it has come to mean 'heretic' amongst the more dogmaticaly inclined, but at an earlier date it once meant a worthy person' or a 'pilgrim'. It's root can still be identified in the Jain word for a Siddha/Saint ie Tirthankara, and the Greek word for wise man ie Tiresias. By adopting such 'reviled' words we highlight how important it is for us to reject extremism and dogmatism, by treading a middle road between restraint and excess, discipline and wilfullness, altruism and egotism, self and no-self, a path that we believe is exemplified by the great bodhis, though of course, expressed in slightly different ways, but succinctly expressed through the Jain teaching of Anekantavada, which we believe is a legacy of Rishabha Buddha himself, via the Prasvanath tradition to which Jainism and Buddhism are both descended.Whatever preconceived views one may have about the buddhist Path, regarding its New Agey associations, how one must behave, or what constitutes 'holiness', put them aside now, for you will find within Bodhyrgayana something not quite realised for the last 1500 yrs. Gotama Buddha himslef prophesied that his own teaching would become corrupt 500 -1000yrs after his death, and Bodhyrga is an attempt to reestablish an understanding of the essentials of sarmana/shraman teaching as understood by those very men and women who have been able find their 'way home'.Simply read the 18 Core Maxims of Bodhyrga [Ideology page], which is a condensed version of the Bodhyrga, Sarmana Buddhist, position, in an easy to obsorb format. If they speak to you, that is all that matters, and a connection has been found, for a tradition is only as respectable and valid as its own members believe it to be. Each individual themselves, and their own sense of 'truth', is the core element of this tradition. If one does not resonate with these maxims, then no harm has been done, to you or us.On his deathbed Siddarth Gotama was asked who his disciples should follow after his death, he replied "dhamma is enough". Likewise, with a goblet of wine in one had, and lying in a bronze bath full of warm water, Epicurus toasted his own disciples and said " Farwell my friends, the truths I taught hold fast", and both teachers then entered their paranirvana. Even though such Awakened Ones have left us a great legacy, all of them encouraged their disciples to listen to their own particular inner voice, to use this to question even their own teachings, and to avoid blind faith, and though we in Bodhyrga will take refuge in the Buddhas we would also encourage seeking refuge within ones own Self.
