History:

The Astronomical Societys Anti-lightpollution Section (AS-ALS) was established in 1992, but lightpollution has been discussed by professionaland amateur astronomers at least since the beginning of the 1980'ties, primarily in the USA.Goal: The section contributes to the fight against lightpollution in Denmarkwith the purpose to secure everyones possibility to enjoy and study thenight sky.The objectives of the section are: To gather members interested in lightpollution. To gather and distribute knowledge about lightpollution,its causes, extent and possible countermeasures. To initialize and participate in a debate about lightpollution. Offer advice to the solution of problems caused by lightpollution.

Activities:

The section has published a number of papers on the subject of lightpollution, which all members joining the section will recieve and thesection also publishes a newsletter which is sent to all members of thesection. The members furthermore recieve invitations to talksarranged by the section alone or in coorporation with others andthe section also produces information-sheets, booklets, folders, poster-exhibitions and T-shirts which can be ordered/bought/rented orlended. The section also compiles a library, a slide collection and a databasecontaining addresses of companies, organisations and authorities relevant forthe work of the section.

Level of Activity:

From the work of the section in 1993 the following activities can be mentioned:One member has distributed a folder about lightpollution at a public observatory. Another member has translated and adapted information-sheets fromEnglish to Danish. A third member has arranged a meeting, where an invited speaker gave a talk including a slide-show about lightpollution.A fourth member took advantage of the expected meteor-shower in august andobtained some media-coverage with a suggestion about turning of the street-lights in Copenhagen. A member has been in contact with representatives for an electricity company and with mayors and technical stafffrom some communities. A member has participated in a nordic outdoor lighting cogress with a poster-exhibition and distribution of different folders.Generally the level of activity is 100% dependant on the effort made by theindividual members.

International Coorporation:

The leader of the section and other members exchange experiences and materials about the fight against lightpollution with corresponding organisations world-wide including theInternational Dark-Sky Association and British Astronomical Association's Campaign for Dark Skies.

Membership:

Everyone who supports the goals and objectives of the section can become amember. No special skills are required. The section is open to active aswell as passive members.

Section Fee:

Membership is presently rated at DKK 100,- for the first year and thereafterDKK 40,- per year. For this amount you get the papers about lightpollution,the newsletter and information about meetings, talks etc. A subscriptionto the newsletter alone is rated at DKK 50,- per year.Membership or subscription is obtained by transferring the relevant amountto the Giro account of the leader: 6 09 25 78 (Per Tybjerg Aldrich).
