G.W.F Hegel Resource Site G.W.F. Hegel Hegel's SCIENCE OF PHILOSOPHY HOME OF THE SWEET ABSOLUTE "Thus the life of God and divine cognition may well be spoken of as a disporting of Love with itself; but this idea sinks into mere edification, and even insipidity, if it lacks the seriousness, the suffering, the patience, and the labor of the negative." It is thisrind that the Concept must penetrate before Reason can findits own inward pulse and feel it still beating even in theoutward phases. But this infinite variety of circumstanceswhich is formed in this element of externality by the light ofthe rational essence shining in it - all this infinitematerial, with its regulatory laws - is not the object ofphilosophy....To comprehend what is, is the task ofphilosophy: and what is is Reason." Hegel, Werke, vii, 17.This web site is devoted to the study of Hegel as he presents himself in the context of his ownwritings. In this way we allow Hegel to teach us what theScience of Philosophy is, and how, through such Science, theAbsolute Truth reveals or rationally unfolds itself, althoughthis may challenge, in a radical and transformative way, theaccepted ideas and methods we may currently have of philosophyand science. By taking the approach of simply followingHegel's thought in its own development, we discover in theprocess that we have actually re-invented Philosophy andScience in a such a totally comprehensive and systematic waythat we are finally able to integrate Mind and Matter into anAbsolute Whole that transcends and encompasses both while yetmaintaining a clear differentiation and distinction betweenthem - a genuine unity in diversity that has been the cynosureof philosophical inquiry from time immemorial. The task is to scientifically comprehend theability of Reason to simultaneously hold contradictory sides, such as identity and difference or unity and diversity, withina higher unity, the Absolute or Spirit, withoutreductionistically collapsing the differentiation. Theexplicit process involves three stages: (1) the abstractunderstanding of the separated sides of the contradiction, (2)the dialectical relation of the sides, which dissolves theirabstract independent separate existence (negative reason), and(3) the raising of this dialectical relationship into adynamic unity - a process Hegel calls aufheben orsublimation, and in his later writings - positive reason. Theability to rationally think through this process provides uswith an insight into the essence of the Concept (Begriff),whose intrinsic dynamic is constitued by thedialectical and sublimational activity that is self-evoked bythe very nature of the various aspects or moments of theConcept itself. To understand this requires a rigorouslyscientific mind and sound philosophical training in order tobe able to follow the dialectical and sublimational movementconsistently throughout the whole development of thePhenomenology, Logic, Nature and Spirit until the entire scopeof Reality is taken up into a rational, systematic Whole - theAbsolute Idea or Divine Personality. This is not to be misunderstood as a spiritmonism - it is not a monotonous, static result, but a livingmulti-dimensional Reality - a result that is ever producingitself through the process of expressing or externalizingitself in otherness, then returning to itself by findingitself in this otherness. This process is the unending pulsebeat of the Absolute where each beat may be considered aparticular, while the pulse is the universal whole. And thisis not to be misunderstood as pantheism since otherness meansexactly what is 'other' to God, this pure opposition being anessential moment, the overcoming of which is the very life ofSpirit.Continuedtop Translate this page Copyright © GWFHegel.Org |
