Dear Companions, October often sees an uptick in Unitarian Universalist congregational attendance. I hope that is true for your congregation. As ever, I encourage you to be mindful of your hospitality. Here’s a few tips to be more inclusively welcoming:• Reserve some parking spaces marked “Sunday Guests.”• Staff your greeting table. Give guests an attractive nametag.• Ensure you have a modestly sized “Guest Packet” with basic Ministry information [no by-laws or budgets, please!] illustrating how you serve members and the community.• Be sure to invite a member to “host” your guests — sit with them in the service, introduce them during social hour, etc.• Be sure your guests get a follow-up post-card or phone call that in some way says, “Thanks for coming; we hope to see you again.”• And COUNT! Pay attention to how many guests your have, particularly 2 and 3 timers — they are your future members.A gentle reminder about the “Real Rules” [see www.floridadistrict.org] concerning this fall’s political campaign. Congregations can and should speak to the significant issues of our day. Just take care you do not endorse or campaign on behalf of any candidate for office or party.Vote No on 2 is a broadly shared emphasis among Florida Unitarian Universalists who resist amending the Florida constitution. Many of our congregations will host educational events this month. Nearly all our clergy will speak to the issue — most on October 19th to counter a Baptist-led “pro” Sunday. I will be among those participating in a multi-denominational rally Tampa Bay witness that afternoon.Last summer, Unitarian Universalist Association General Assembly adopted Oppose the Florida and California Marriage Protection Initiatives [http://www.uua.org/socialjustice/socialjustice/statements/115812.shtml] calling on all Unitarian Universalists to do our part to stop this assault on human dignity and our rights to associate or form domestic partnerships. Please do your part. Witness for our values!I remind you as well that October 12th is the date for Association Sunday [feel free to choose another date if that’s not good for you]. This annual appeal asks Unitarian Universalists to devote one service a year to discussing our larger ministries and inviting gifts for our larger ministries.
