It may be difficult to distinguish fact from fiction in a world where we’re bombarded with sound bites and catchphrases, but one website is trying to do just that. Launched in September 2004, GovTrack is an independent website dedicated to promoting transparency in the government and civic education. The site allows viewers to search for current and past bills by name, number and subject area, as well as read voting records and biographies of all members of Congress. Don’t know who your representatives are? There’s also a map to figure out your Congressional district. GovTrack also emphasizes the importance of community involvement. People who visit the site can participate in online forums and congressional analyses. For those interested in keeping up with Congressional updates, the site has customizable “Tracked Events” pages. This newly-remodeled area encompasses nearly the entire lower level of the library and meets a growing need for space within the library that is reserved for quiet study.The new reading room features four long rows of individual study tables. Each hardwood table has a long reading lamp running its length and eight electrical outlets to support laptop use on the law school’s wireless network. Surrounding the tables are tall wood chairs, which have added 114 new seats to the library’s total seating capacity. Study carrels line the windowed wall. The library’s collection of law reviews of Indiana law schools is shelved along the back wall. The library’s extensive collection of microfiche resources is located in cabinets along the interior wall.Creating the reading room as a comfortable place for quiet study involved a summer-long construction project. Work began just days after the spring semester ended, with library staff moving over 800 shelves’ worth of hardbound law review volumes to storage in the law school’s unfinished shell space. These law reviews are now available to faculty and students in .pdf format via HeinOnline or through retrieval from storage on request. Over the summer the entire lower level was re-painted and re-carpeted while the custom-made tables and lamps were being built and shipped. The site was developed to provide educators with a full range of resources and activities to support the teaching of landmark Supreme Court cases. The general teaching strategies include moot court, political cartoon analysis, and continuum exercises.The standard resources available for each case include:Background summaries and questions for three different reading levels.
