Far from the royal law of both Edinburgh and London, these and other border families wrote their own code, enforcing it with lance and broadsword. Known as "border reivers", "riding surnames", or "steel bonnets", these fiercely independent horsemen carved an enduring legacy. They were warriors of legendary ferocity, yet theirs was a culture rich in music and poetry. Their ballads won the admiration of the world, and their blood has flowed through the veins of world leaders, poets, and the first man to walk on the moon. Whether you are descended from them, interested in history, or simply enjoy an exciting story, come and explore the stirring world of the border reivers. Our Society, and its goals We are an independent group of historians striving to research, study, and honor the culture and history of the border reivers by the following means: A thorough study of literature, art, and other documentary resources, with free exchange of information among members. The publishing of a quarterly journal, featuring articles on border politics, key historical events, material culture, ballads, weaponry, clothing, geneology, and general history. Click here to see a sample article. Reproduction of period armour, saddlery, and equipment, in an effort to investigate the manner of their use. Geneological studies, and exploring our kinships. Ultimately, by reproducing the infamous 'Truce Day' gatherings as living history events; with period attire, horse racing, music, contests, comradery, frolic and other 16th century borderland pursuits.
