La figura del paseante solitario en la ciudad, disfrutando del anonimato y el movimiento urbano, tiene cierta completud. No pensamos: “Qué paseante?”, “Qué ciudad?”, “Cuál es la relación entre ellos?” Imaginamos al paseante como un hombre desprejuiciado en busca de solaz, saliendo al encuentro de la ciudad indiferente, también ella desprejuiciada. Sin embargo, para entender a Imre Kertesz como paseante solitario en Budapest (en rigor, como paseante en Buda, la parte de la ciudad que se encuentra al oeste del Danubio) debemos hacernos esas tres preguntas. Y responder, algo esquemáticamente: El paseante solitario es un judío, la ciudad es una ciudad gentil, y la relación entre ellos es de hospedaje, es decir, de extranjería.
