Le Lievre Reunion 2006
Website History
This site was originally set up to facilitate the organising of a family
reunion for the descendants of brothers Pierre (Peter), Edouard (Edward) and
Isaac Le Lievre who emigrated to Australia from Jersey in 1844, c1852 and 1852
respectively. The Reunion is now also history.
The site has now been modified to record the reunion but retains some family
history in the form of descendant reports, short stories and photos. The site
will be further developed over time. All feedback and additional information is
welcome.
The Reunion
The reunion was held in Wagga Wagga, New
South Wales, Australia
on the 30th September and 1st October
2006, with 130 people attending.
On the Saturday, participants registered between 9:00 and 10:30am
at the Tolland Public School Hall, viewed photos, descendant reports and
memorabilia, renewed acquaintances and met relatives for the first time. This
was the first time that descendants from all three brothers had gathered at the
one function.
With the assistance of glorious spring weather, the school proved to be an
excellent venue with BBQ facilities, canteen and ample outdoor seating in shade
or sunshine.
Also on display were two vintage vehicles of family significance. The older
was a 1928 Chevrolet 30cwt truck restored by Robert and Stuart Le Lievre. It
was formally owned by their uncle, Leonard Francis Le Lievre of
“Morrilla”, Barmedman. The second vehicle was a recently acquired
1936 Chrysler Airstream owned by Robert and Stuart’s late father, Keith
Percival Le Lievre. Keith’s father, Francis John Le Lievre, had owned
such a vehicle at the time of his death in 1941 and Keith had dreamt of owning
one himself for the next 62 years. A few years ago, Keith said if Rob could
find one, he would buy it. Rob found it and secretly bought it! Keith stood by
one of his own sayings – “pay up and shut up”.
Two flags flew at the reunion, the family crest and the Eureka
flag. Several sources suggest that Edouard (Edward) Le Lievre was involved in
the Eureka Stockade, perhaps his wagons forming part of the barricade. Further
research is required.
Presentations were given by Rob Le Lievre (welcome, surname origin, crest, France,
Jersey, other migrations), Marilynne Sharp (Pierre
descendants), Stu Le Lievre (Edouard descendants), Leigh Hanna (Isaac
descendants).
On Saturday evening, 119 people attended the dinner at the Commercial Club.
Impromptu talks were given by Brian Le Lievre (as to how he came to be living
in Canada), Michael
Le Lievre (life in South Africa
– Aussie’s Service Station) and Roger Le Lievre with some family
history questions.
On Sunday, we regrouped at Rob’s shed for a BBQ lunch. The organisers
planted a magnolia in memory of their parents who passed away in April and
August 2006.
Rob’s shed is not just any old shed. It is a 4/5 scale, modernized
copy of Albert Henry Le Lievre’s stables and barn located at “The
Hill”, North Berry Jerry, being 12 miles north of Coolamon, New South
Wales. In their day, these were the stables of the district. When I say
modernized, AH’s is cypress pine and galvanised, corrugated iron whilst
Rob’s is RSJ portal frames and colourbond. AH’s stables and barn
are an improved copy of his father’s, Edward Le Lievre’s stables
and barn which are still standing (only Just) on “Thalia”, Corack
East, Victoria.
Feedback on the reunion has all been positive with attendees appreciative of
the effort organizers had gone to.
It was a shame that Mum and Dad could not be there but we chose to believe
that they had the best seats in the house.
All copies of photos ordered at the reunion have been posted out.
Copies of all worthwhile photos taken at the reunion are welcome. Please
send to reunion@lelievre.id.au.
The Cairn
When you drive around Victoria,
you often see historic markers which is something you don’t see in New
South Wales. We had long thought of erecting some
sort of marker at Thalia in memory of Edward and Mary Le Lievre and their
family. With the removal of the homestead in 1997, little remained on Le
Lievre’s Hill other than some sheds (including the afore mentioned barn
and stables) and the palm tree which once stood in front of the homestead. Time
was also running out for Dad, so we bit the bullet, set aside Easter 2006, and
began planning.
Many years prior, we had measured up the homestead. The current owners
provided extensive photos from all angles. With this information, Rob was able
to build a scale model of the homestead out of 3mm steel which he had hot dip
galvanized for longevity. We ordered a brass plaque to be incorporated into the
brickwork. Plenty of bricks remained on site from the demolished chimneys.
On Good Friday, we drove to Wycheproof, set up camp during a thunderstorm in
the caravan park, and proceeded to Thalia with the objective of setting the
hold down bolts by nightfall. Saturday was full on. We placed the precast slab
over the hold down bolts and bolted it down, fitted the steel frame, bricked up
and backfilled with cement stabilized sand, fitted the plaque to the road side
of the cairn and the homestead model to the top.
None of the
above would have been possible without the cooperation of the owners. Not only
did they help with site selection, tractor power, water tank and sand, but also
put on the biggest and most scrumptious Saturday night dinner you could
imagine.
