FEW WORDS ABOUT MY ROOTS
I am a direct-line descendant of Maurice
ARRIVÉ, who arrived in
Canada from France around 1650, and settled on Ile
d'Orléans near Quebec City. There were four other individuals with the
surname ARRIVÉ (or LARRIVÉ) who emigrated from France to Canada in the
mid-1600s. The others were: Jean, Pierre and Jacques. They all
originated from the Poitou region in west-central France (today's
Charente-Maritime and Vendée), but no relationship between them has
ever been positively established, although there are reasons to believe
that Maurice and Jean were related.
The descendants of Maurice ARRIVÉ soon changed their surname to
LARRIVÉ and
LARRIVÉ dit MAURICE, probably to distinguish themselves
from the descendants of Jean, who were also settling in the Ile
d'Orléans - Quebec City region. Later, in the mid 1800's, the
"dit" ceased to be used, and many simply adopted the surname
"MAURICE".
The children of Maurice ARRIVÉ continued to cultivate land on Ile
d'Orléans, but their children and grandchildren dispersed far and wide,
initially in the Quebec City area, and later along the north and south
shores of the St. Lawrence River. One prominent branch populated
the Montmagny and Bellechasse region, south of Quebec City, and from
there, some moved to Bastiscan and Trois-Rivières, about 100 km west of
Quebec City along the north shore of the St. Lawrence River.
Another noteworthy branch of descendants are those issued from the
marriage of my 6G Aunt Marie-Hélène LARRIVÉ, granddaughter of
Maurice, to Pierre BENETEAU dit LA BALEINE. At least two of their
children migrated to the Windsor-Detroit area where today a large number of
their descendants can be found.
An important milestone in the history of my family occurred
around 1850, when my
GG Grandfather, Abraham MAURICE, migrated with his wife and children
from Batiscan to Penetanguishene along the shores of Georgian Bay in
Ontario. Several families from Batiscan pioneered the region
around Penetanguishene, and still today, their surnames are common in
the area: BELCOURT, BRUNELLE, MARCHAND, MARCHILDON, MAURICE and a few
others. These families intermarried with other families that had previously settled in the area, mostly
Voyageurs/Courreur des Bois who had accompanied the British Soldiers in the Sault Ste. Marie,
Mackinaw, Drummond Island area during and after the War of 1812. Many of them married native
women and initially settled on Drummond Island, but most later moved with their families to
Penetanguishene and surrounding area when Drummond Island reverted to the United States in
1828. Their surnames are also common today around Penetanguishene; they include
the BOUCHER, the CHEVRETTE, the BOYER, the BEAUSOLEIL, the LABATTE,
the LAFRENIERE and others.

What
will you find on this site?
This site presents a series of charts of the descendants of my GG
Grandparents, one chart (with sub-charts of their children and/or
grandchildren, as needed to keep their size manageable) for each of the
eight sets (A to H, below). Two of the four paternal sets were
born in the Batiscan/Trois-Rivières area of Quebec and died in the
Lafontaine/ Penetanguishene area of Ontario. They are: Abraham MAURICE m. Flavie
MARCHILDON and Jean TOUTANT m. Zoée MONPLAISIR (possibly a native
woman). The other two sets, François-Xavier ROBITAILLE m. Félicité GIROUX
and Jean-Baptiste MICHEL m. Julie BISSON were born and died
in the Sherbrooke region in the province of Quebec, but some of their children emigrated to
Lafontaine/Penetanguishene in the 1860s.
My maternal GG Grandparents (E to H,
below) all originated from
around Quebec City, Lévis and Bellechasse County, and most of their descendants
remained in that region, although some families eventually emigrated to the New
England States.

RACINES
Je suis descendant en ligne directe de Maurice
ARRIVÉ, qui est venu au Canada de France vers 1650, et s'est
établi à l'Ile d'Orléans près de la ville de Québec. Il y a
eu trois autres individus portant le patronyme ARRIVÉ (ou LARRIVÉ)
qui ont émigré de la France au Canada vers le milieu du 17ième
siècle. Leurs prénoms étaient: Jean, Pierre et Jacques.
Ils étaient tous, y compris Maurice, originaires du Poitou dans
la partie centre-ouest de la France (aujourd'hui les départements de
Charente-Maritime et de Vendée), mais aucun lien de parenté n'a jamais
pu être établi entre eux de façon définitive, quoique certains faits
portent à croire que Maurice et Jean étaient
parents.
Les descendants de Maurice ARRIVÉ
ont changé rapidement leur patronyme à LARRIVÉ et à LARRIVÉ dit
MAURICE, probablement pour mieux se faire distinguer des descendants
de Jean, lesquels devinrent nombreux à s'établir dans la
région de Québec et à l'Ile d'Orléans. Plus tard, vers le
milieu du 19ième siècle, le <<dit>> cessa d'être
employé, et plusieurs familles ont simplement adopté le patronyme
<<MAURICE>>.
Les enfants de Maurice ARRIVÉ
ont continué à cultiver la terre sur l'Ile d'Orléans, mais leurs
enfants et leurs petits-enfants se sont dispersés, initialement dans la
région de Québec, et plus tard le long des rives nord et sud du fleuve
St-Laurent. Une branche importante de la famille a pris racine
dans la région de Montmagny et Bellechasse, au sud de Québec, et de
là, quelques uns ont émigré vers Batiscan et Trois-Rivières, environ
à une centaine de kilomètres à l'ouest de la ville de Québec sur la
rive nord du St-Laurent. Une seconde branche de la famille que
nous nous devons de mentionner, est celle issue du mariage de ma
grande-tante au 6ième degré, Marie-Hélène LARRIVÉ, la
petite-fille de Maurice, à Pierre BENETEAU dit LA BALEINE.
Au moins deux de leurs enfants ont émigré dans la région de
Détroit-Windsor où se retrouvent aujourd'hui un bon nombre de leurs
descendants.
Un point tournant dans l'histoire de ma
famille s'est produit vers 1850 lorsque mon
arrière-arrière-grand-père, Abraham MAURICE, émigra avec sa
femme et ses enfants de Batiscan à Penetanguishene sur les bords
de la Baie Georgienne en Ontario. Plusieurs familles de Batiscan ont
colonisé la région de Penetanguishene et, encore aujourd'hui, leurs
patronymes sont très courants dans cette région. Ce sont les
BELCOURT, les BRUNELLE, les MARCHAND, les MARCHILDON, les MAURICE
et quelques autres. Ces familles se sont mélangées à d'autres qui avaient émigré dans la région auparavant, la
plupart des voyageurs et des courreurs des bois qui avaient accompagné les forces anglaises
dans le secteur de Sault-Ste-Marie, Mackinaw et l'Ile Drummond, durant et après la guerre de
1812. Plusieur d'entre eux ont marié des indiennes et se sont établis sur
l'Ile Drummond. En 1828, lorsque l'Ile a été retournée aux États-Unis, ces familles ont été contraintes de déménager
et plusieurs d'entre elles sont allées s'établir dans la région de Pénétanguishene. On retrouve
aujourd'hui plusieurs de leurs descendants dans la région, y compris les
BOUCHER, les CHEVRETTE, les BOYER, les BEAUSOLEIL, les LABATTE, les LAFRENIERE et d'autres.

Ce site présente une série de
tableaux des descendants de mes arrière-arrière- grands-parents, un
tableau pour chacun des 8 couples (avec sous tableaux de leurs enfants
et/ou petits-enfants au besoin, afin de maintenir leurs dimensions
respectables) - voir A à H ci-dessous. Deux des quatre couples

émigré vers les états de la Nouvelle-Angleterre au cours des
années.
