Baltic Institute of Folklore
Baltic Institute of Folklore
The Baltic Institute of Folklore (BIF) is founded by the academic folklorisic institutions of the Three Baltic states - Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania in 1995. BIF coordinates folklore studies and research. BIF exchanges information about the current institutions, folklorists, conferences, fieldworks, workshops, publications and folkloristic material.
Introduction
This institution was established much due to the example of NIF. The very first idea of this type of co-operation came about during the Nordic-Baltic conference Recent Issues in Folkloristic Research organized by NIF in Turku, Finland in August 1992. The idea then kind of fell asleep. During the conference "Folk Song: Text and Voice" in Lielupe, Latvia, in September 1994, Estonian folklorists once again raised the issue of the Baltic folklore institution. In the end of 1994 the Archives of Latvian Folklore undertook the initiative to organize a meeting of the Baltic folklorists with the aim to discuss the possibilities of some joint effort. Still, after some preliminary negotiations, Tartu, Estonia was chosen for the first meeting of representatives.
The first meeting resulted in the elaboration of the main principles of the Baltic Institute of Folklore, included in the Project of the BIF's Statute, also the Agreement on the establishment of BIF was signed. Many possible projects were discussed.
