"In all of us there is a hunger, marrow-deep, to know our heritage -
to know who we are and where we have come from.
Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hollow yearning.
No matter what our attainments in life, there is still a vacuum.
An emptiness.
And the most disquieting loneliness."
- Alex Haley

1828 Tax List
, Perry County, Missouri (transcribed)
Collected two years before the county's first federal census, the 1828 tax list is one of the earliest enumerations of the residents of Perry County, Missouri.
Items from
The Weekly Perryville Union, 1863-1878, Perry County's oldest newspaper.
Recently added new pages from July through December 1877.
We've been searching for articles related to our family, and have collected a lot of other unrelated material. We thought it would be fun to present it all here, because it provides a first-hand look at what life was like for the inhabitants of Perryville over 125 years ago.
Goodspeed's History of Southeast Missouri, 1888
Perry County Biographies - Completed
When we were just starting our research, a very nice lady from Arkansas somehow heard about our
connection with the Klump family of Perry County, Missouri. Not having a computer of
her own, she borrowed her church's computer one weekend and sent us an email which included the
two bios related to the Klump's from Goodspeed's. We had no idea what "Goodspeed's"
was, but since have discovered that this is a valuable resource discovering our roots in Perry
County, Missouri.
The information in the History of Southeast Missouri was compiled in 1888 from interviews with many inhabitants of the area. Often the information given is what people believed to be true, but is not 100% accurate. Still, we are glad we are able to present the transcribed biographies here for anyone researching Perry County's history.
