Where to from here? Dedication of The Chronicles Quotes from Readers Quotes from Chapter I    Introduction More about the Author - Jerry Dentinger Notes on developmentHow it all came together?     The Chronicles went to the printer in October of 2001.  After six weeks, several test printings, and numerous corrections, a beautiful 600-page book was presented to me.  It had been eight years in the making.  I had enjoyed truly incredible cooperation from family members all over the United States, Canada, and France.  With such broad and serious interest in the end product, The Chronicles simply had to include the broadest possible number of branches of our family tree.  No single-line sketch of my own ancestors back to 1650.  I had that already in early 1995.  But that wouldn't cut it!  What finally emerged was a huge portrait that would include all known branches, with thousands of descendants of Hans Michael Dentinger, born in the village of Oberroedern in Alsace, about 1650.  Nothing like it exists anywhere in the world.    In July of 2000 I had posted a short web page, then followed with letters to many Canadian and U.S. Dentingers.  This was a last-ditch effort to draw in additional information before wrapping up the project.  The results gave me another year's work!   How many more Dentingers or Dendingers were out there?   Very many, I was sure of that.  The project was already 600 pages in length and I was growing weary.  The search could go on forever.  I made my way to the printer with what I had in hand. How complete is the picture?    Tales of numbers can be deceiving.  "Why, I have 8,000 names in my family history.  You have only about 4000?"   Yes, but every one of them is a Dentinger or Dendinger, a Dentinger spouse, or the son or daughter of a Dentinger.    Though the book includes many, many Dendingers, allow me to simplify this by referring simply to the Dentinger name.   After serious reflection, I have mercifully not included generation after generation of non-Dentinger descendants.  Indeed, they are all "descendants of Dentingers."  But at what point is it no longer a story about Dentingers?   After one such generation, neither parent is a Dentinger.  I found it important to stop right there.    With even greater consideration for readers, I have not included the genealogical history of my mother's family, the families of my two grandmothers, my wife's family, the family of my son-in-law...and on and on.  Such an effort would easily generate tens of thousands of names. You would be bored out of your skin.  Worse, how many volumes would it take?  Worse yet, who would purchase the set and decorate their family-room coffee table with such?  No one, I think!  Besides, I had neither the time nor the finances for such a project!       Such a project is much more suited to posting on the Internet, if you are comfortable with that.  Visitors to the site can pick and choose what they want to see.  No need to "buy into" thousands of people in whom they have no interest.     The flip side of this issue is that we have included all known information about each family.  Genealogical bones deserve some flesh.  Each of us could show thirteen generations of Dads and Moms on a single page.  Each included Dentinger can in fact see his own direct ancestors all the way back to 1650.  The outline alone for all of us is 62 pages in length.  Additionally, I have created a final chapter that includes six groups of family members for whom we do not yet have the definite link to the rest of us.  I'm convinced we are all related and that someone will eventually uncover the missing links.  Check the Table of Contents for a good overview of what all is in the book.Table of ContentsAuthor's Foreword - A small stipend to cover costs will be expected.  Where to from here?                                                      Every contributor to The Chronicles wants our family picture to be as complete as possible.  Along with births and deaths in the family, we are discovering new pockets of family members.  Since publication I have added  five new babies from the Louisville area alone.  Happily, only one death.  Please forward any new information to me.  Everyone will be grateful.    We all understand that not everyone has the same level of interest in family history.  No one can argue with that.  But what about the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren of those less interested?   When these grow up and develop an intense interest in their ancestors, they are likely to ask why their own parents and grandparents were not included inThe Chronicles.  It would be nice to not have to respond: "Grandpa simply wasn't interested.  He just didn't think it was important."   If you have information to offer, please be in touch with me.  Moreover, you might consider giving the book as a gift to siblings , children, or grandchildren.  Remember that this compilation of information is not available anywhere else in the world.DedicationI dedicate this contribution to the history of the Dentinger familyto my own immediate family,Jane, my wifeSarah, my daughter, and Michael Merrick, her husbandDaniel, my sonJoyce Homan, his fianc e.In the deepest "no-man-is-an-island" sense (Dunne), let it always be remembered that each of us, no matter our strengths or short-comings, whether consciously or without thought, is an enriching or diminishing part of the whole.  My immediate family has afforded me valuable encouragement and support.  I thank them for this.  Of similar significance, I have experienced first-hand the strong bonds that tie our larger family together.  My contact with hundreds of families in Europe, Canada, and the United States has been genuinely enriching for me.  I sense that I have touched a few lives myself.  It is my sincerest hope this record of "the ties that bind" will bring some tangible enrichment to the lives of our family members in all quarters of the globe.       Joyce, Daniel, Jane, Jerry, Sarah, Michael Quotes From Family Members:"Bravo!  ... found the box UPS left.  In it were my three books.  Outstanding!  ...You did an outstanding job on this."   Ron Dentinger - Dodgeville"I've only had a chance to look through the book quickly, but am very impressed.  All the photos and biographies are a treasure.  You should feel very proud of your finished product!"  Nancy Archdekin - Omaha"I am writing to thank you for all of your hard work.  I have not gotten through the whole book but Stan (her father-in-law) has.  He sends his congratulations on a job well done.  He has enjoyed reading about the family immensely. He really wants to let you know how much he appreciates the time and effort you put forth on behalf of the Dentinger 'clan'."   Robyn Dentinger - Duluth"I gave a copy to my dad (87 years old) yesterday as a Christmas present, and he's finding it really fascinating.  He's discovering a lot about his own family that he never knew (including the spelling change from Dentinger to Dendinger).  Thanks for all your hard work in documenting what we know at present about our heritage."  Stan Dendinger - Laguna Beach"I just received the book!!! What a wonderful job you did.  You should feel very proud in your accomplishment.  It will be something that will be passed down through generations. ... This is something I have waited a lifetime to see."   Mary Dentinger Olson - Bagley, Iowa******"These are typical samples of many reactions I have received.  This helps me to suspect that eight years of hard work on this might have been worth it."   Jerry von Louisville
