women who do comics hella well
You draw like a
girl
When I bought my
first
Action Girl comic, I thought to myself...
"If only I knew how to draw something more than an
acid-tripped stick figure, I could be like
Sarah Dyer." Unfortunately, I still can't draw worth
shit, but I will gladly hand over cold hard cash for
Sarah's latest comics.
Action Girl is great because you won't see any triple
D-cup girls running around saving the universe. You'll
just see regular girls with normal lives. Sarah
created the comic so girls under 18 would want to read
it. Most grrl comics are for adult audiences only.
I can't preach about
Sarah and Action Girl enough..so go see for yourself
what it's all about.
If you're into the bizarro stuff, then you should
check out a lass named
Dame Darcy and her lush,
horrific comic, Meatcake. It's published from
Fantagraphics comics and has its own cult
following of Goth kids. Imagine if
Edward Gorey was a woman and you've got
Dame Darcy. Some of my NYC friends say she is
insane, but to me that only adds to her credibility as
an artist. My favorite of all
her comic book characters is a girl named
Strega
Pez, who talks by printing mini tablets from her
cut throat, much like a Pez candy dispenser.
If you send
Dame Darcy some of your own hair, some money and
praise, she promises to make you a doll in your
likeness. An eerie likeness.
Diary of a Dominatrix, by
Molly Kiely, is also a good comic to pick up when
you've had it with all the stupid, 14-year-old boy
hormone-driven graphic novels.
It's about the life of a dominatrix who has clients
paying to lick her boots.
If you want to find more information on grrl-made
comics or comics with strong female characters, this
Web thang is a good place to start. You can always
check out the book
From Girls to Grrlz : A History of Women's Comics from
Teens to Zines,
by
Trina Robbins and Carla Sinclair.
It has interviews and features on some of the best
female comic book artists and writers around! This
book is a great resource for those of us into the
sisterhood of comics!
The following are some excellent sites to other girl
comics:
Art Babe -- by Jessica Abel
Scary Godmother -- by Jill
Thompson
Slutburger -- by
Mary Fleener
Just Who The Hell Is SHE,
Anyway? -- by Marisa Acocella
Gloomcookie -- by serena
