Ancient World History
The Ancient World
This
site is designed to assist historians and other scholars interested in ancient history. As it grows, it should help to network
people who share historical interests, and to provide additional resources
which support ongoing research.
At the
right is a picture of the ancient world. If it looks very similar to the
current world, that is for good reason. As you know, the Earth has been
here for billions of years, yet our history covers only a few thousand.
That is why "ancient" history has so much similarity to --
and lessons for -- the world we live in today.
As Santayana
once said, "Those
who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it." I
prefer to say
it a little differently: that those who know history have a tremendous
advantage, and a chance for a better life. Your own knowledge of
history has probably already proven beneficial in different ways, and will
no doubt continue to do so.
My
personal area of interest is
mainly the civilizations of the ancient Mediterranean -- that dynamic
meeting place between Europe, Africa and Asia. It is
fascinating how much of what we do today had its roots in those times. And
understanding the people of that ancient age goes a long way to helping us
understand the sources of fighting -- and of inspiration -- which cast
shadows and light on our lives today.
