As some of you might know, I've been all over the country this past year meeting people and going to conferences and what not, meeting all the right people, doing all the right things, but in doing so I've become very disenchanted with the face of mixed-race activism, in that I feel it isn't aligning itself with the anti-racist movement as effectively as it could. I'm kind of in love with the blogosphere, and I thought that this might be a good medium for the work-- what ever it becomes-- that I could pursue. So I'm thinking about starting a blog to more tangibly fuse the two movements. Ideally, the blog would be comprised of three to six regular contributors who write articles that pertain to mixed-race (including transracial adoptee) identity that present a critical analysis of the relationship of mixed-race identity to the anti-racist movement. People could focus on movies, tv, music, academia, fashion, literature, their day to day experiences, make up, marketing, classism, privilege... whatever they like, really.. as long as it's about mixed identity and furthers an anti-racist agenda.I would love it if the people involved in this project came from a wide variety of experiences in terms of class and educational backgrounds, ages, gender identities, sexual orientations, geographic locations, etc.If any of you are interested in being a writer, or have experience with the blogosphere, please contact me with any thoughts you might have about this project. Also, if you know anyone who might be interested in this project, please please please forward this email to them.Yours,Danni Sigwaltaim: dsigwaltyahoo: dannigrl212gtalk/email: danielle.sigwalt at gmail dot com(2 comments | Leave a comment) Call for proposals! (I've dealt with this ever since I have moved here! Is this not supposed to be the country where all races are welcome?) It seems no matter what city I move to, I never fit in. I tried many times to call the police, but they do nothing, even though this is racist beatings. (etc, I won't go into it.) I follow most often Chinese culture, since I am very close to my father, and I speak Chinese with my family. (But we mix Indian traditions in sometimes too, so everything is very confusing to others!~ Hard to explain..) My mother is full Rajasthani(Banjara), so her skin and eyes are lighter, and I am anemic, so I am naturally lighter skinned, with very black hair, sometimes I can pass as a weird-looking Iranian! I don't know what I look like and I hate it. >.< I have always been upset about the way I look...I was hoping to join to find others who know how I feel about this. (If I am in the wrong place, I am very sorry to bother you all! (I apologise if no one has understood anything I said, >.<, bad morning.)(5 comments | Leave a comment) Nov. 26th, 2006 @ 03:05 am osnadurthaHi everyone! I hope everyone is having a good weekend :)My name is Jenna, and I am brand new to this community.Just recently, I had a run-in with someone on LJ. He claims that the term "biracial" doesnt exist, because all "race" is, is WHAT YOU LOOK LIKE. If you LOOK Asian, but are both white AND Asian, then you are ONLY Asian, according this fine gentleman.I am white(Irish) and Native American (Chumash) (also raised mostly in Italy, but that's another story :) I am VERY proud to be biracial. No matter what anyone thinks of me, I am forever biracial :)I looked up the term "biracial" on dictionary.com, and this is what came up:bi·ra·cial (b-rshl) Pronunciation Key Audio pronunciation of "biracial" [P]adj. 1. Of, for, or consisting of members of two races. 2. Having parents of two different races.So.. how am I not biracial? Who gave him authority over who is of what race(s)?What do you think? How do you folks deal with this sort of person?(9 comments | Leave a comment)Other entries» lj study about sexualityI'm a graduate student at SFSU and I'm doing a study about expressing sexuality on livejournal. I have a quick, 30 question survey I would love help with. I'm trying to get a diverse population and I'm looking at how the differences in how people use livejournal effect how they express their sexuality on lj. So if you have a few minutes, please fill out my survey. I am a young, transracial woman of Chinese and Scottish descent. I live in Glasgow, Scotland, UK. I am a Socialist and a feminist. I have also just created a new community called [info]racism_rage, a place to rage against racism (I hope that little community promo is okay?).I have suffered a lot of racism over the years, particularly in school, although not just there. I was really pleased to find a community especially for those of multiracial heritage. :) I hope I can get to know you all quickly!Oct. 14th, 2006 @ 06:15 pm(2 comments | Leave a comment)» What's up with that??"The proposed changes, to be implemented by 2009, would allow students to first identify themselves as either Hispanic/Latino or not. Only non-Hispanics would then check as many as five races that are applicable. Pacific Islanders would shift into a new category, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, separating them from Asians. How the racial-ethnic breakdown is reported to the department would change in one way. Educational institutions would total how many non-Hispanics checked more than one box and put them into a new category, “Two or more races.”Full article here. So, I'm very glad they are trying to address multi-racial reporting, and also doing what they can to get everyone to actually identify with what ethnicity and/or race they are for more accurate reporting overall, but I see two MAJOR faults with this. 1. All mixed-race students who select more than one race are actually going to LOSE more of their identity by doing so, because the races they choose aren't going to be reported at all. Don't go just half-way with this! — I'm sorry, but it being to much of a burden to actually pay attention to the races people check off is not good enough, at least not for me. 2. Why is it only non-hispanics that will go on to choose from the race options?? The US Census (as well a number of government orgs) ask people to identify themselves by both ethnicity AND race, not one or the other. If you can be African American and Native American, why can't you be Hispanic and Native American? Sorry to all of you school-goers out there who thought you were both Latina and Black — apparently, you are mistaken!Maybe they'll adjust this new system before it goes into effect in 2009. One can only hope. If it's going to be that way, I'd almost rather it stay the way it is...Oct. 2nd, 2006 @ 10:35 am(2 comments | Leave a comment)» Mixed-Race Networks/CommunitiesHey all. I'm in the planning stage for a major mixed-race conference. Right now, we're developing the website, and are trying to put together a list of mixed-race/transracial adoptee communities. Could you possibly just list come that you are a member of/know of?
