What's a Vas Littlecrow? Is that your real
name or is it Vanesa Littlecrow?
The short answer: Vanesa Littlecrow is a small part of a
real name so long, that it doesn't fit into my social security card.
Vas is my nickname, and VAS Littlecrow is the name of my business.
A more complete answer about my nickname: Vas is a play on words. It
means "going" in Spanish, which alludes to the fact that I am always on
the go. It also is a shortening of Vasquez which is a nickname created
from a combination of the sounds in my maiden name. Following this so
far?
Vasquez is also short for Velasquez which is a variant of Belasques
which is a Sephardic Jewish word which could mean either "dweller of
the Basque country" or "dweller of the little crow's land."
This naturally brings us to Littlecrow which is a shortened and loose
English translation of my "grown-up" Taino name given to me by a
special friend who shall remain anonymous.
The Little Crow portion of my name is not the most flattering, because
I was being compared to Chief Little Crow in the context of being a
brilliant and talented "cultural sellout". The fact that I'm related to
Christopher Columbus and come from a politically unpopular Taino clan
doesn't help either.
Still, I cherish the name because of the lessons contained within, and
because I actually have a ton of respect for Little Crow. For this
reason I kept it, but I shortened the translation Littlecrow for
simplicity's sake. Nifty, huh? Coincidentally enough, VAS Littlecrow
also stands for "Visual Art Services by Littlecrow."
How do you create your cartoons and
illustrations?
Loki: A Sharpie, cheap paper and my laptop.
Vanesa: I sometimes use pen and ink, but my primary medium is digital
rendering. For an more detailed statement about my digital work, please
download my PDF on the subject. This document mostly focuses on fine
art, but much of it applies to my cartooning as well.
What inspires your art and cartoons?
Stuff like the Nine Lives of Catnose and my milder fare,
tend
to be observational or semi-biographical. These works are generally
self-explanatory and easy for the viewer to comprehend, even if that
person isn't savvy to my life experiences. My fluff work tends to be
as simple as it looks, and there's really not much else to it.
Other stuff, like the metaphorical autobiography work in the
Suckaverse, and the even more disturbing SOUP Wars project, are a
lot harder to explain. For the Suckaverse art is to be commercially
and critically viable, it was imperative for me to explain where I was
coming from. Personally, I don't think I should have to, but I must
since my goal with metaphorical autobiography is to be accessible.
This type of art and literature deals with some exceptionally
disturbing situations I had to deal in regards to my being sexually
assaulted, my struggles with various addictions and my involvement with
cults and countercultural activities. I don't feel comfortable
talking about these incidents in a direct manner, but by masking
reality with faraway locales, bizarre characters and
exaggerated behaviors, it provides me a safe outlet to vent my fears,
frustrations and anger about what I went through, openly and sanely.
Metaphorical autobiography already has many spokespersons, however
the more extreme expressions of my explorations into this category
of creativity, didn't seem to have an adequate name or definition. So,
I came up with a catchy
neologism and an usefully, but ultimately bloated definition. So
here it is, in its not-kid or work-safe, text-only glory.
Did Vanesa write a poem entitled "Puerto Rican
Woman"?
I most certainly did. "Puerto Rican Woman" was originally
published in the Multiracial Reader and has been shared in readings and
around the Web by many like-minded Boricuas and Latinos.
Unfortunately for me, it has been mistakenly attributed to
"Vanessa Colon-Ortiz" or "Venessa Colon-Ortiz" rather than by my actual
maiden name of "Vanesa 'Littlecrow' Colón-Ortiz". I am
posting a link to the poem for any Puerto
Rican or Latino who might appreciate it. I officially grant permission
for anyone to republish this poem for non-commercial purposes, as long
as I get credit by the proper name. ;)
How do I become a model?
Please refer to this entry from my Confessions of an All-Purpose Model blog
for a starting point.
Why do you blog about your private life?
Actually, there is a lot about my private life that
doesn't get posted online. However, I do blog about my life and work
for several reasons:
1- Whether unintentional or not, 99% of all press and/or online
coverage I've received contains some amount of distortion. This is not
to place fault on anyone, merely an observation. Communication isn't a
perfect science, so this is to be expected. In my reasoning, by
compiling as much as I can, and by being as candid possible about my
life, I save myself some of the heartache that rumormongers can bring.
2- Blogging is a great excuse for me to practice my writting skils.
3- Blogging is an efficient way for me to communicate with friends,
fans and associate. I hate email and IM with a bloody passion, and I am
often hard to get a hold of by phone. My blog gives me the ability to
let others know how I am doing without the hassle.
4- Most importantly, blogging is a fun past-time.
"No" is the answer to the following questions:
* Can I date Vas or hire her as an escort?
* How do I get a free (naked) picture of Vas?
* Aren't you ashamed of yourselves?
* Would you like to take part in our sketchy third-world scheme
involving your bank account number?
* May I interest you in a threesome, phone sex, cyber or other creepy
sexually deviant activity with me?

* Are you interested in TFP or a test shoot?
* Could you post the names of your cats and/or full family names online?
* Do you have a direct link to Polska Blood Sucka Phucka or the Phoebe
Phrodos Project?
* Will you lend me some cash?
* Is Vas a member of The Church of Jesus Chirst of Latter-Day Saints
(Mormons)?
* Is Vas an Atheist or Satanist?
* Is Vas Liberal, Democrat, Republican, Anarchist, Communist, Socialist
or Pro-Choice Vegan?
* Would you change your life if you could live it over again?
* Are Tainos extinct?
"Yes" is the answer to the following questions:
* Have you ever dealt with stalkers?
* Are you really a hunter?
* Could you help me with an illustration project?
* Are you available for public speaking engagements about the dangers
of irresponsible drug use?
* Are you really Taino/Mixed-Race?
* Do you feel like G-d/good fortune/hard work/friends and family bless
your life?
* Is it possible to be a
homosexual and happily married to a person of the opposite
sex.
* Is it true that you are a conservative with libertarian tendencies?
* Is it hard to run your own business?
* Have you heard the good news about Jesus Christ?
* Are you nuts?
* Do you like living in Rice?
* Do you feel like success?
"I'm not entirely sure." is the answer to the
following questions:
* Are you a good person/moral/feminist/gay-rights
activist/homophobe/genius/fool?
* What's your religion?
* Can you do anything?
* Are you against censorship?
* Whose side are you on?
* Will Nik Arnoldi's "Ace and Bog" episodes return online?
