Favorite Verses, Proverbs & Riddles
There is no eye like understanding,
No blindness like ignorance,
No evil like illness,
Nothing so dreaded as death.
-Buddhist Precepts
One treasure, and one alone, can no robbers steal.
One treasure, and one alone, can one take through
the doors of death.
The wise man's wealth lies in good deeds that
follow ever after him.
-Khuddakapatha
Cling not to experiences;
Ever-changing are they.
-Phadampa Sangye
The three worlds are transitory, like an autumn cloud.
The birth and death of beings is like watching a dance.
The length of a being's life is like a lightning flash,
Coming swiftly and abruptly to an end,
Like water dashing over a steep precipice.
-The Four Contemplations
Finally obliged to depart, even a king cannot take his
wealth and his companions along,
But wherever he goes or stays, the results of his actions
will follow him, inseperable as a shadow.
-The Four Contemplations
Rebellious thoughts are like an abandoned house
taken over by robbers.
-Phadma Sangye
To cherish oneself brings only downfall.
-Guru Puja
The crow calls the hog black.
Gold lies deep in the earth, yet its light shines bright in the sky.
(Good deeds, although hidden, will always bring benefit)
If sand is poured in the donkey's ear, he will shake it out.
If gold is poured into the donkey's ear, he will shake it out.
(The ignorant cannot tell the difference between what is
wholesome and unwholesome)
One mouth, two tongues.
(Two-faced)
Lazy in the morning, working late at night.
A rabbit cannot put his paws on the horns of a deer.
Said of one who has aspirations beyond his capabilities)
You can't put two taxes on one man;
You can't put two saddles on the same horse.
Having drunk the country's water, one should obey the
country's laws.
Better than the young man's knowledge is the old man's experience.
If the inner mind is not deluded, the outer deeds will not
be wrong.
The life of every being is like a bubble in water.
Honour a king in his own land; honour a wise man everywhere.
Knowing just one word of wisdom is like knowing a hundred
ordinary words.
If one desires to have true happiness, one must be perfect
in suffering.
The wise pursue wisdom, the dull follow in blind faith.
If one is learned, but pretends to know, it is evil.
If one is learned, but hides it within, it is evil.
There are three cold and three warm times in a spring day.
In a man's long lifetime, there are three joys and three sorrows.
It goes all over the world, but we cannot see it.
(wind)
She eats all the best food and never gets fat.
(A Saucepan)
It has two wings but cannot fly away.
(Scissors)
