We work to prevent gun violence through education, advocacy and public awareness by regularly educating people around the State on non-violence and safety for children and families. The Coalition works with other organizations and individuals to facilitate community solutions and public health recognition of the gun violence problem. OCAGV encourages the use of signs to prohibit the carrying of concealed weapons and provides a download for a sign on our web site, coordinated five Protest Easy Guns events in April, and works with law enforcement and Mayors to advocate for sensible regulations.   Working Together to Reduce Gun Deaths and Injuries States United to Prevent Gun Violence Research and Education Fund is an association of independent state-wide gun violence prevention organizations. The purpose of States United is to allow our members to share best practices, programs and legislative ideas in order to work effectively to prevent gun deaths and injuries. If you want to get involved, check out our list of state members and contact the one in your state.  There was nothing in the recent Supreme Court decision about D.C. gun laws that would prevent legislators from passing sensible gun laws to protect our families and our communities.  So we can and will work to pass sensible gun laws, particularly laws which will close loopholes in how guns are sold and keep guns out of the hands of illegal gun traffickers.   Although the House passed a bill about DC gun laws that goes far beyond the requirements of the Supreme Court decision and eliminates the D.C. assault weapons ban and its registration system for guns, hopefully the Senate will not pass this bill (H.R.6842)   Congess should let the City Council of D.C. continue to work to modify its laws to bring them into compliance with the Supreme Court decision. In the meantime our organizations are busy on all sorts of educational work. Ceasefire Oregon Education Foundation held a conference on September 10th with law enforcement, public health professionals and concerned community members. They wanted to "to review the incidence of and risk factors for gun violence in Oregon, explore effective interventions, and examine ways to bring this issue back to the forefront of the public's concerns." This summer New Yorkers Against Gun Violence working with the American Friends Service Committee organized Youth Town Hall Meetings in three boroughs - the Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn.  At these meetings young people brought their concerns about gun violence to legislators and other city officials.    They talked about the ease of buying a gun and the need for more community resources for job searching and after school activities. North Carolinians Against Gun Violence has expanded to Western North Carolina and hired a Western North Carolina Outreach Coordinator. This Outreach Coordinator is working with UNC-Asheville to build a permanent on campus organization which will work to reduce on and off campus violence. At the same time, the Outreach Coordinator is working with a local Sheriff's department to distribute gun safety information and trigger locks. In the future the coordinator will also work in Asheville to address concerns of youth and gang violence. Women Against Gun Violence has had a busy summer with a brunch fundraiser, a donation of books and program at an elementary school, a youth forum and plans for a speaker's bureau training in the fall. Take a look at their wonderful newsletter which summarizes all of their activities. They are also working to get municipalities to require gun dealers to post notices about the dangers of a gun in the home. Citizens for a Safer Minnesota has created and posted a video on Youtube about the dangers of unlocked guns at home to children.  This video came from a radio ad that they developed together with Million Mom March chapters in their Protect Minnesota campaign.  See the video below.   AC_AX_RunContent( 'width','425','height','344','src','http://www.youtube.com/v/-_8GmAwfzoY&hl=en&fs=1','type','application/x-shockwave-flash','allowfullscreen','true','movie','http://www.youtube.com/v/-_8GmAwfzoY&hl=en&fs=1' ); //end AC code                 home state members illegal guns press coverage other resources contact us SU only
