About CEWIP
The CAP Committee to Encourage Women in Physics (CEWIP) was initiated in 1983 by Professors Jim Megaw and Jim Prentice, who noticed that women were dramatically under-represented in the physics community. This is no less an issue today, for while there have been large shifts in representation of women in fields such as medicine, there are still very few women choosing physics for a career.
CEWIP, whose membership has been composed of both men and women since its inception, has been involved in many activities, including, among other things:
organizing panel discussions at the CAP annual congress on programs that encourage female physicists in Canada, the USA and Mexico,
producing a special issue of Physics in Canada on female physicists in Canada (March/April 1996 issue),
proposing female speakers for the CAP Lecture Tour
producing a Directory of Women in Physics in Canada, which was circulated to CEWIP members.
holding a plenary session at the CAP annual congress
organizing a delegation to attend the First International Conference on Women in Physics. Read the delegates' report
Activities
The Committee has a number of activities planned or underway, including:
The compilation of an electronic database of Canadian female physicists and updating the Directory of Women in Physics in Canada.
The compilation of a list of Canadian female physicist speakers and their areas of expertise.
A delegation from CEWIP, comprised of Marie D'Iorio (NRC), Ann McMillan (MSC), Janis McKenna (UBC), and Eric Svensson (NRC) recently attended an international conference on women in physics which was organized by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics. The delegation presented a poster of the results of a recent survey on the status of women in physics and participated in many working groups.

Annual Congress
Each year at the CAP Congress,
CEWIP has an annual general membership meeting. In 2004, CEWIP and
the Division of Physics Education sponsored a session entitled "Improving
the Climate for Women in Physics. This will feature a presentation by
Prof. Barbara Whitten of Colorado College entitled "What Works
for Women in Undergraduate Physics?" Prof. Whitten was a member
of a committee that conducted site visits to nine undergraduate physics
departments in order to study best practices and was co-author of a
report of this study in Physics Today, September 2003.
In 2003, we hosted Carolyn Emerson,
co-author of Becoming Leaders: A Handbook for Women in Science, Engineering
and Technology, before a reception and discussion.
In 1999, we invited Monique
Frize, the first NSERC/Nortel Joint Chair for Women in Engineering
and Science, for a plenary session at the CAP congress.
The CEWIP Women in Physics session,
which was held on June 15 at the 1998 CAP Congress at the University
of Waterloo, was attended by approximately thirty men and women. We
heard a very interesting seminar on women in meteorology by Nancy Cutler,
the Director General of the National Weather Services Directorate at
Environment Canada. Nancy Cutler spoke about an international survey
of the status of women engaged in activities and programmes governed
by the World Meterological Organization. She then contrasted the experiences
of women in Canada with those in other countries.
The seminar was followed by an informal reception. For their support
of this event, we remain grateful to Magnotta Winery and the Physics
Departments at Acadia University, Brock University, Lakehead University,
Laurentian University, McGill University, University of Montreal, University
of New Brunswick, University of Ottawa, University of Toronto, University
of Waterloo, University of Western Ontario, and the University of Windsor.
Resources
There is a wide variety of information on- and offline that we feel is of interest from the perspectives of encouraging women in physics on all levels, tracking the history of female physicists, and interesting girls in science and physics. Please note that these organizations are compiled from submissions and suggestions from committee members and site visitors and are not necessarily endorsed by the CAP.

Please let us know of any additional resources.
Colloquia
Speakers
The CAP is building and maintaining a list of Canadian female speakers in physics. This list will be openly available to anyone visiting this site searching for an interesting colloquium or seminar speaker.
If you would like to be listed, please fill out the database & directory form, and select the speakers list option. Please include the area(s) of specialization and address you wish to have listed on the speakers list webpage.
The CEWIP Speakers list will be accessible here once the current update has been completed.
CEWIP is seeking interested volunteers to help bring this project to fruition. Contact us if you would like to contribute.
For other speaker resources, try the following:
The Directory of Canadian Women in the Mathematical Sciences maintained by the Canadian Mathematical Society, which includes some physicists and many women in related fields.
The Committee on the Status of Women in Astronomy Database maintained by the AmericanAstronomical Society, which is extensive and easy to search.
The Colloquium and Seminar Speakers List of woman speakers in physics is maintained by the American Physical Society (APS). Canadian universities wishing to invite speakers from this list may be eligible for the Travel Grants For (American) Woman Speakers program, also run by APS.
Contact one of the national or international organizations listed in our resource section. It never hurts to ask!
Database & CEWIP Directory
The CAP is building and maintaining a database of Canadian women in physics and an online directory of female physicists accessible to all registrants.
Please fill out our online form to include yourself in the CAP database of Canadian women in physics. All personal information in the database is kept strictly confidential. The CAP will use the database to identify prospective speakers for CAP lecture tours, and compile comprehensive statistics on the current number of Canadian women working in Physics. In addition, the database will be used to fulfill requests the CAP receives to forward job advertisements to the individuals listed.
The registration form also includes an option to be listed as a CEWIP speaker, as well as an option to be included in the Directory of Women in Physics, which is accessible to all registrants in the directory. CEWIP hopes that this directory will allow students at all levels to contact a mentor, and that registrants will use the directory to network regionally and within their subject area.
Access to the Directory of Women in Physics is restricted to registrants and uses approved by the CAP office. Online password controlled access will be available here once the current update has been completed.
CEWIP is seeking interested volunteers to help bring this very important project to completion. If you would like to contribute your efforts, please contact us.
