| Wellington Women Lawyers Association New Zealand NZ submissions legal law ABOUT THEWELLINGTON WOMEN LAWYERS ASSOCIATIONThe Wellington Women LawyersAssociation was formed in 1983. It is an incorporatedsociety. Its stated objects are:· To work for equal opportunity and the advancement of women in thestudy and practice of law· To work for the reform of the law and its administration, and forthe advancement of social policy, in order to promote and protectthe interests of women· To promote the use of womens skills in law· To facilitate social contact amongst members· To work for and promote the establishment of associations withsimilar objects throughout New Zealand· To affiliate with and maintain connections with national andinternational associations with similar objects.What do we do?The way that this translatesin practical terms is as follows:Monthly activities: In recent times we have organised a range of activities includinga seminar on women lawyers as academics, an evening at Circatheatre to see Wit, an evening to celebrateWellingtons Women Queens Counsel, a Christmas dinner,a get together in Lower Hutt and a tour of the new court there,and for the future we have planned a panel discussion on theProperty Relationships Bill, a debate, an annual general meetingwith guest speaker and golf.We endeavour to cater for allof the ages and stages of our members in terms of content. Some meetings are in the evening, but others are at lunchtime sothat women with family commitments can come.Newsletters:We produce an action-packed newsletter bi-monthly to inform anddelight.Lobbying:Where political issues arise that are of interest or concern toour members or to women generally, we comment where the committeeconsiders such a course is warranted. In doing so, weconsult as widely as possible to ensure that we are reflectingthe attitudes of the Association members as a whole.Nominations for High CourtJudge Appointments: We are approached on aregular basis by the Solicitor-General and invited to nominatepersons for appointment as Judges of the High Court. Womens ConsultativeGroup: The Association has arepresentative on the NZLS National Womens ConsultativeGroup. The Group has 10 members and a convenor and meetsfive times a year. The NZLS established the Group to ensurethat the views of women practitioners are taken into account inthe Societys decisions and processes. Council Brief articles: Wewrite a monthly article for Council Brief. Each month weprofile a different Wellington women who is either in the law, orassociated with the law. The aim of the article istwofold. First, it raises the profiles of some of the womenin (or associated with) the legal community. Second, itgives insight and information to readers about the diversity ofcareer paths and options that are available.Nationwide networking: There are women lawyers associations in Auckland, Christchurchand Otago, with whom we meet annually to share ideas andinformation on a national basis.Liaison with womenstudents at VUW: We liaise with women faculty members and students to ensure thatthey can share the benefit of job information, networkingopportunities and forums to discuss relevant issues.Contact with LegalProfessionals students: We speak to everyprofessionals intake about why we exist, what we do and how tojoin.Work referral list: We keep a list of women who are interested in having workreferred to them in their area of expertise. When we getenquiries from the public, we provide names and contact numbersof members who have suitable experience.Board appointments: Ifa member indicates that she wishes to be considered for Board orother statutory appointments, we refer her contact details to theMinistry of Womens Affairs. Once the member concernedhas filled in the Ministrys nomination form and provided aCV, she will be added to the Ministrys database, which isregularly consulted when statutory appointments are made.Mentoring programme: We have set up a mentoring programme which links senior womenpractitioners (5 years or more) with less experienced or newlyadmitted practitioners. We have established a database ofpotential mentors and those who wish to bementees. We provide initial mentoringguidelines to participants. Once the mentoringrelationship has been formed, it is up to the participants as tohow they wish to run it. We particularly encourage membersto volunteer to act as mentors to pass on their wisdom,experience and suggestions to newer practitioners.Employment advice: We have a list of women practitioners with experience inemployment law who are willing to provide preliminary advice on aconfidential, pro bono basis to women lawyers who areencountering employment problems (including sexual harassment) inthe workplace.Submissions on relevantlegislation: We have a subcommittee thattakes an active role in monitoring the development of legislationand policy that impacts on women. Where the subcommitteeconsiders than an Association submission is desirable, it bringstogether a group of Association members with expertise inthe area and puts together a submission which is made in theAssociations name. The Wellington WomenLawyers Association has around 300 members, and ourmembership continues to grow. The potential of theAssociation is limited only by the energy of its members (whichat the moment seems to be fairly limitless). Membershipcosts $50 per year, or $20 if you are unwaged.
