My websites
crazyguyonabike.com - started in 2000, this is a place for bicycle tourists and their journals. It began with my own account of a coast-to-coast ride across America in 1998, and grew when I developed the code to allow other people to post their own accounts. There are now over 2,000 bicycle tour journals and articles by people from all over the world, with more than 200,000 pictures.
Topicwise and townwise - this is a family of websites based on the crazyguyonabike code, expanding the community template into other topics and locales. Both topicwise and townwise will share the same user database, and so build a strong community network which will span a wide variety of content. Topicwise is a collection of topical community subsites related to diverse subject matters such as adventure sports, culture, activism, the environment, and academia. This site is up, and there is a topicwise overview article. Meanwhile, townwise (under construction) will be a locale-oriented version of topicwise, where each subsite is related to a particular town. It will be a useful service for people trying to find and share local information, buy and sell locally using the classifieds, post articles about their town, find events and so on.
Online ID Registry - in 2004 I developed a working prototype for a service where people can prove their identity to others online. Featured on slashdot.
nilspace.com - an open-source project to develop a distributed, network-aware, easy-to-use computer language (Nil) and programming environment (under development, currently on hiatus while I develop the topicwise websites).

Résumé: I am an independent computer software developer currently based in St Louis, Missouri, programming since 1982, B.Sc. in Computer Science, and working in the industry since 1990. Current skills include C++ (since 1989), Open Source tools such as Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl and Embperl, and Web Services (using SOAP::Lite). Also past experience using Java, CORBA and ColdFusion.

How my name was hijacked by email scammers - Fraudsters have been sending out emails pretending to be me, for some odd reason. Apparently I want to transfer large sums of money across international boundaries. Wow, just goes to show, you never know what you might be up to when you're not looking.
Perl utilities
deep - a powerful and extensible Perl script which recursively traverses subdirectories, processing files that match a given filename pattern. There are different commands, such as find, replace and delete.
mysearchbot - a Perl web indexing engine, published in April 2001 issue of Dr Dobb's Journal. The perl script is largely self explanatory. There's also a search template written in Embperl which demonstrates performing a search using the tool.
spellserver - a Perl spellchecking server based on SOAP::Lite, published in September 2001 issue of Dr Dobb's Journal.
