Rick Lorenz Personal Webpage
 What's NewPicturesSoundsGeneologyLinks   What's NewWelcome to my web page! I started it on August 1, 1999, so that I could post my photographs, songs, genealogy files created by my cousin, and some interesting links. The usual personal web page stuff. Wow, this page is over five years old.On August 22, 2004, I put up some more pictures. They're mostly from my cousin Melanie's wedding.After all the activity in May and June it's been a pretty quiet summer. It never got hot, so feels like summer never actually arrived. And now it's almost over!Politics: The election went well for the Green Party. We got 4.3% of the vote, which will translate into millions of dollars of federal funding over the next few years. Our candidate, Chris Walker, matched the national average with 4.3% of the vote.Our riding had the biggest election upset in the country. The incumbent David Pratt, Minister of Defence, lost to the Conservative Pierre Polliver. Pierre is not only 25 years old, but has only lived in the riding eight months, and has a French name. Even my redneck landlord voted for him! I think he benefitted from the sponsorship scandal and the unification of the Alliance and PC parties. But he also ran a very good campaign. I talked to him, and he seems like a good guy. He may well run the country in 20 years.Science: The summer stars are at the zenith, but the winter stars appear if you stay up late. Last night I saw The Pleiades and Taurus. Did you know "Subaru" is the Japanese name for The Pleiades?Movies: Hmm, last time I mentioned that I was looking forward to the "The Day After Tomorrow". It was actually pretty bad, but did have some cool shots. But "Happy Accidents", "Matchstick Man", "Big Fish", and "21 Grammes" are all good. "50 First Dates" was better than I expected."Fahrenheit 911" was fine, but was presumably made before 3/11 (the Madrid bombing) and so implies that the president is just making up the threat of terrorism. I personally think the threat is real, even though it's politicized. I think they have prevented many attacks, but have been poking the wasp nest at the same time. The connection between the Saudis and the Bush family wasn't news to me because my room-mate knows about all that. I could see it shocking others.Books: I read an awesome book about sustainability called "Eco Economics" by Lester Brown. Sustainability is not only necessary, but possible, and will be beneficial in ways we haven't even considered. I also read "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". Of course it was good! I can't wait for number 6.Music: I bought "The Album" by Abba this week, and it's great! I didn't used to like it, but maybe grew into it. I spent the day yesterday learning to play all the songs, which reacquainted me with my Telecaster. "Move On" is brilliant.Things: I got my car fixed, and it cost about $1800. But it'll keep the rust off.I bought a new car stereo; a Sony AM/FM/CD/MP3 unit. It sounds pretty good, but I got new speakers too, and the original ones were better. It only works with pristine CDs, so I'm copying the scratched ones to MP3. This way I can put about 15 albums on one CD! I also got new boots, replacing the ones I've had since 1996. They're comfortable but won't last as long. Globalization is ruining footwear. Last updated August 22, 2004.Comments to rick_lorenz@hotmail.comgeovisit();
