Candy Sidner Coming to Brown! (Posted: 1/25/08 12:10am)
We had a great turnout at the First WiCS Meeting, thanks to everyone who came! We got some great ideas for events to come, and we want to hear more, please email us event ideas at wics_coord at cs dot brown dot edu .
Candy Sidner is coming to Brown on February 7th to give a talk on Robot/Human interaction and on building an engaging robot. The talk is at 4pm in 368, everyone should come! We also have the great pleasure of having her talk to WiCS beforehand. We are arranging a WiCS social in the 4th floor Library at 3pm where we'll be serving: cookies, fruit snacks and tea. If you have other commitments, you should stop by and introduce yourself, especially if you're interested in robotics, AI or natural language processing. Check out her site for more information.
First Spring Semester Meeting (Posted: 1/22/08 6:30pm)
Welcome back to Brown! We hope you had a great winter break and are ready to get back into computer science!
Please join us at 4pm on Thursday, January 24th in the 3rd floor atrium of the CIT. Snacks from Au Bon Pain will
be provided!
We are inviting all the girls from cs4 to join us. We will be going over our plans for this semester (there
are several major events in the works!) and talk about course recommendations. It would be great to see you there!
Mentor/Mentee Lunch (Posted: 10/14/07 5:40pm)
Our fall mentor mentee event is coming up! This is a great event to attend to catch up with the other women in the department and talk about anything from cool projects in the department to choosing courses and getting interview advise.
The UTA (Undergraduate Teaching Assitant) program is starting recruiting next week, so this is also great time to talk to current TAs and upper classmen about being a UTA and what it is like to TA courses you're interested in.
You don't need a mentor or mentee to show up, see you there! Tell your friends!
Kabob and Jobs this Sunday! (Posted: 9/21/07 5:40pm)
Our first big event - Kabobs and Jobs - is this Sunday, Sept 23, at 6:30pm
on the 3rd floor of the CIT (although we'll meet in the lobby of the CIT and the WiCS coordinators will let you up to the 3rd Floor.
It's a great opportunity to learn about internships and job opportunities,
hear about past student experiences, and work on your resume and
interviewing skills. In addition, we're ordering lots of Kabob and Curry,
so you'll get a free dinner. This event is usually fairly popular and is open to the all the undergrads, see you there!
New Semester! (Posted: 9/10/07 10:00pm)
Welcome to a new semester at Brown CS! We've (coordinators) been working hard to come up
with some awesome events for this semester. Career week is coming up, so we are in the works
of creating a career week event that will include: resume workshop,
interviewing tips, career fair tips, and internship stories from your fellow students. How is this
different from Career Development Center event? We are gearing it toward YOU, the females in the department
by inviting WiCS alumni and members of the Microsoft recruiting team to share their experiences and advice
about how to make a good impressions and find a job that will suite your interests.
Our goal for this semester is to build a strong network of women within the incoming freshman class, we are
looking for mentors (junior/seniors) who are willing to dedicate some time to building a relationship with a
mentee. Contact us if you want to learn more about the mentoring program.
New Webpage is up! (Posted: 9/10/07 10:00pm)
We are currently working on putting together a website that will be the central point for accessing resources
and information on: career planning, research opportunities, grad school applications, and much more. So don't mind the
dead links, we'll be putting up new stuff every week, so keep checking!
