Kepo'okela Cultural Foundation Background
Ke Po'okela Cultural Foundation is dedicated to promoting an
understanding of, and harmony between, the different cultures that make
up our society today. By using our experiences within the Hawaiian culture,
a model Pacific Rim melting pot, and sharing such traditional Hawaiian
values as respect, caring and accountability we strive to :
Promote and cultivate the discovery and resurgence of Hawaiian cultural
heritage by utilizing cultural workshops and concert performances.
Disseminate through the general community the diversity and strength of
the Hawaiian cultural heritage.
Promote the ability for many cultures to live together in harmony, celebrating
each other's diversity.
Ke Po’okela Cultural Foundation is a non-profit organization whose
purpose is to perpetuate and preserve the Hawaiian Culture by:
Providing a school (Hula Halau) of formal education in Foundation traditional
Hawaiian dance, music, language, values and traditions, history, and arts
and crafts,
Establishing a Performing Arts Dance Company,
Providing cultural presentations by the Performing Arts Dance Co.,
Organizing community events that bring visibility and revenue to the Hawaiian
community,
Providing seminars and workshops in the school systems and general communities,
Providing scholarships for students to go to Hawai'i to attend the Kamehameha
Schools’ Hawaiian Exploration Program,
Providing college scholarships. and by
Participating in various fundraising events in support of the Hawaiian
community.
Hula Halau Na Meakanu
O Laka O Hawai'i is the dance school from which the Performing Dance
Company is derived. It is a formal school of hula established in 1985 in
Torrance, California. The mission of the school is to provide a positive
environment through which students may grow in their cultural awareness
and personal evolution. Students are given formal training and education
in traditional Hawaiian dance, chants, music language, history, values
and customs, and arts and crafts. The purpose of the Halau is twofold:
1) to ensure that the Hawaiian heritage and traditions are properly preserved
and passed on to future generations, and
2) to share the true richness of the Hawaiian culture with as many people
as possible.
The Children’s Workshop
serves as a cultural enrichment experience that contributes to the perpetuation
and preservation of the Hawaiian culture. This four hour community event,
taught by instructors from Hawai'i, teaches children about the Hawaiian
culture through dance, music, arts and crafts, story telling, and sharing
what they have learned. It is also a social event that brings the community
together in the spirit of aloha (love) and lokahi (harmony). Reveues raised
will help establish a Scholarship Trust Fund used to send California fifth
graders to Hawai'i to attend the Kamehameha
Schools’ Hawaiian Exploration Summer School Program, and to fund the
future Hawaiian Cultural Arts Children’s Workshops.
Kaulana Na Pua, The Best
in Hawaiian Hula and Music, is an annual fund-raising event takes place
the third weekend in September in Southern California and actually consists
of two separate events: 1) a workshop/seminar, and 2) a chant/concert performance.
The workshops and seminars are led by Hawai'i’s esteemed educators and
cultural specialists. The Chant Performance features chanters representing
the various Hula Halau from all over California. The Concert Performance
features Hawai'i’s finest accomplished musicians, sharing the stage with
the best hula artistry from various Hula Halau in California. This fund-raising
event contributes to a College Scholarship Trust Fund, and to fund future
annual Kaulana Na Pua events.
