UFCW MINORITY COALITION
SCHOLARSHIP
PROGRAM
Purpose:
To provide scholarship assistance through the UFCW Minority
Coalition to members of the United Food & Commercial Workers,
to attend the college degree program at the George Meany Center National
Labor College, affiliated graduate degree programs, or institutions
otherwise professionally recognized as qualified to offer instruction
in the academic areas pursued.
Criteria:
Scholarship awards will be based on the applicant’s personal statement
essay, anticipated costs, and other relevant financial criteria,
including other financial support available to the applicant.
Funding:
Three scholarships in the amount of $750 dollars will be awarded on
a yearly basis. In addition, a total of $3000 will be awarded to qualified
individuals to take specific courses (i.e. non-degree courses) that
may improve one’s ability to perform current job assignments or prepare
an individual for future job advancement within the labor movement.
The maximum amount awarded for individual classes will not exceed
$750.
Procedure:
The
applicant shall complete a scholarship application including the
anticipated related costs and any additional financial support received.
Where applicable, the applicant shall submit with the application
a signed “Authorization for Release of College Degree Program Information.”
Applications
will be reviewed by the UFCW Minority Coalition Scholarship Committee
composed of an administrator of the *George Meany Center, a member
of the faculty, and a representative from the UFCW Minority Coalition.
For applicants not attending the George Meany Center, the reviewing
scholarship committee shall consist of three members of the coalition
executive board.
Eligibility:
The applicant must be a member in good standing of the UFCW (or staff)
and the UFCW Minority Coalition for a period of at least one year.
Active Members:
The applicant
must be a student in good standing in the college degree program
or an applicant to the college degree program at the George Meany
Center National Labor College, affiliated graduate programs, or
Otherwise
enrolled in an accredited, licensed or professional institution
recognized as qualified to offer instruction in the academic areas
pursued.
Applicant
must submit a personal statement with a minimum of 750 words outlining
how they will benefit from their educational experience.
Family Members:
Family members
of eligible minority coalition members may receive the UFCW Minority
Coalition Scholarship up to $750. At least one of the scholarships
will be earmarked for the family member of a coalition member.
In order for a family member to receive the scholarship, the applicant
must;
Submit an
essay outlining how they will further the goals of the labor movement
as a student at their respective school (i.e. forming or participating
in a student activist group that volunteers to help organize a
workplace).
The coalition
member must be an active member in good standing, for at least
one year, in order for their family member to be considered.
