31 July - Mexico City—As thousands gather in Mexico City for the 17th International AIDS Conference August 3-8, 2008, Catholics for Choice and its Latin American sister organizations, Católicas por el Derecho a Decidir, will be highlighting Catholic opposition to the Vatican’s ban on condoms using materials developed for the Condoms4Life campaign, www.Condoms4Life.org.

14 April - Catholics for Choice released a publication examining the impact of 40 years of Humanae Vitae, the Vatican document that cemented the ban on contraception. Widely acknowledged as a defining moment in modern church history, Humanae Vitae became a source of great conflict and division in the church. Future of Abortion: Controversies & Care
25-26 June, London - Jon O’Brien, president of Catholics for Choice, gave a keynote speech to leaders working in women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights at the bpas-sponsored Future of Abortion: Controversies & Care conference. In “Presenting the Case for Conscience,” Mr. O’Brien explored what Catholic teachings say about conscience, how abortion is an issue of conscience for women, doctors and the public, and how to maintain services while respecting the consciences of all.
