My name is Sarah Bedford click here to find out a little more about me. Before I go to university I have volunteered to take a gap year working for the non-profit making organisation Greenforce. In April 2003 I am flying across the world to Kota Kinabalu Airport, Sabah, Borneo. From there I am going to travel to a remote island off the north coast of Borneo called Pulau Banggi. Here is a map... I will be spending 10 weeks in a stilt house, raised over the sea, in order to be as close to the reef as possible and away from biting insects. Here is the a weather report from 3 cities close to the region that I am visiting: Unlike the famous Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the coral reefs have never had a long term survey before. So, my job after I have learned to Scuba dive, will be to help survey the reefs and conserve them for future generations. The work of Greenforce is vital in protecting and sustaining the planet's valuable ecosystems. Here is a link to Greenforce if you would like to know more. You too could join up for a conservation expedition like this. At the request of the University of Malaysia, Greenforce is researching the reef, with the aim to set up an MPA, Marine Protected Area, called North Borneo Marine Park. This will go someway towards conserving what is left of the world's coral reefs. Here is a countdown to The Big Day, when I leave for the experience of a life time, which will contribute greatly to saving one of the worlds endangered eco-systems var dayPARAM0 = 9; var dayPARAM1 = 3; var dayPARAM2 = "2003"; var dayPARAM3 = "The Big Day"; So why survey and work towards conserving the coral reefs? The World Conservation Srategy 1980, identifies coral reefs as "one of the essential life-support systems, necessary for food production, health and other aspects of human survival and sustainable development." Coral reefs provide biodiversity, not found anywhere else in the sea: they are rich in useful substances, such as genetic material, essential in the discovery of new medicines. There has been research recently into the use of coral for bone regeneration, for example, scientists have found a way that coral can be used to 'pin' a broken bone instead of using metal. Because the coral is porous, the new bone tissue grows through the coral, which will then slowly degenerate into the bone, enriching it with calcium carbonate to strengthen it. Coral reefs are also a popular destination for tourists. On a more local scale, they protect the land from destruction by storms and strong waves, and they provide resources, such as fish and shellfish for local consumption (and world markets). Did you know? Coral is both animal and vegetable! Although a coral polyp is an animal, which belongs to the same family as the jellyfish, within each polyp is a small amount of algae! The algae consumes the waste from the polyp, while the polyp respires the oxygen that the algae releases. However mankind is destroying this valuable ecosystem, by over exploiting the reef life and fishing too intensively. Explosives and cyanide are often used to fish the reef, and anchors are often dropped onto the reefs. This is literally tearing the reefs apart. Already, over 10% of the world's reefs have been destroyed, and 30% are heading in the same direction. Unfortunately, almost 60% of the world's reefs are threatened by human activity. Did you know? The rate of coral growth is typically 1cm per year, whereas human hair grows on average 30cm per year!!! Adapted from Reef Briefs: Marine Conservation Society Oct 1997 and World Resources Institute June 1998 I am currently working hard to fund raise for the expedition but because I have to raise over £4,000, I am long way off my target and there is not long to go! I am in the process of contacting the local press to try and promote the cause further, and I have had ideas such as sponsored walks and raffles to try to raise more funds! Do you have any ideas? I would really appreciate your help. If you would like to leave a suggestion, please sign my guest book below, you can also read other ideas and comments. Sign Guestbook View Guestbook As I said, I need to raise over £4,000. This is roughly broken down as... £2550 fees for Greenforce, covering food, accommodation and training The cost of a flight, approximately £1000. Kota Kinabalu is an almost unheard of place and not many air lines go there. £400 for equipment such as wet suit, mask, snorkle, fins, bag etc I also need to put some money into my fundraising running costs. Would you like to help raise the money for such a significant and vital cause? Click below for more information Please help me What am I doing to raise money? I have been designing and making hand made gift cards which have proved to be very popular in my local area. So far I have sold over 150 cards at £1.50 each with a further 20 currently on order. I aim to dispatch all orders within a week. Watch this space for my designs and details on how to order some cards! Alternatively contact me at sarahjbedford411@hotmail.com or leave a comment in the guest book. To see how my fundraising progress is going click here! I would like to say thank you to La Redoute the clothing catalogue who have given me a 20% discount. The cotton clothes I have bought from their fantastic collection will be vital in the humid temperatures! To visit the La Redoute website CLICK HERE! If you are looking for an excellent diving equipment shop I found Runnymede Dive Ltd very helpful with an excellent range of stock. Their address is: Unit 11, Eversley Way, Thorpe Industrial Estate, Egham, Surrey, TW20 8RG or phone 01784 436909 for more details! So keeping this brief, help me save the reef!
