Sadly, our friend and colleague, Maurice Goldsmith, passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2008. Maurice was Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, then Research Fellow in the Philosophy Programme at VUW. He was also Emeritus Professor of Political Theory at the University of Exeter, where he held the chair from 1969 until moving to New Zealand in 1989. He was editor of the Australasian Journal of Philosophy from 2002 until 2007, and has written widely on political thought, including books and articles on Mandeville and Hobbes.
We will miss him greatly. Our thoughts are with his family, especially his wife Elizabeth McLeay and their son James. A funeral will be held at Old Saint Paul's Cathedral at 2PM on Friday June 27. Maurice's family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory for scholarships to the Victoria University Foundation.

Seminars
Philosophy seminars are held on Thursdays from 3pm
to 5pm in Murphy 806. All are welcome to attend.

Congratulating Kim Sterelny on being awarded the Jean Nicod Prize for 2008. This prestigious prize is awarded annually in Paris to a leading philosopher of mind or philosophically-oriented cognitive scientist. The Jean Nicod Lecturer delivers a series of at least four lectures in Paris over a period of two weeks. The lectures are then published with MIT Press.
Australasian Journal of Philosophy
The Australasian Journal of Philosophy — one
of the top analytic philosophy journals worldwide — was edited
at Victoria University of Wellington for several years, but has now moved to the University of Western Australia.
