The chance that offenders get caught is almost zero. This has to change. European Liberals and Democrats have launched an online petition www.sayno.eu to fight child prostitution. The online petition pleads for more powers for Europol to fight sexual exploitation of children by Europeans travelling abroad.
The EU cannot close its eyes to sexual exploitation of minors abroad committed by its own citizens. The Council has to give Europol the means to fight these appalling crimes. Who's online? Financial crisis: Let’s keep calm Reacting to the recent turmoil on the world’s capital markets, the European Liberal Youth (LYMEC) calls for deliberation instead of acting for the sake of acting. During a property market boom in the United States in the last couple of years, banks were happy to lend to low-income homeowners. When property prices tumbled, they struggled to pay their mortgage, which in effect caused the banks' trouble. Wednesday, September 24, 2008Responsible driving across Europe The European Liberal Youth (LYMEC) welcomes the recent decision of the European Parliament’s Transport Committee to make Europe’s roads safer by cross-border enforcement of driving fines. Currently, drivers committing a traffic offence in another Member State often avoid paying the penalty for their misconduct. The new legislation ensures that in the future drivers will be able to be identified and fined for offences they commit anywhere in the European Union.
LYMEC President Aloys Rigaut states: 'The four types of offences which fall under the scope of the proposal (speeding, drink-driving, non-use of a seatbelt and crossing a red traffic light) are responsible for 75 percent of all road deaths across Europe. Such grave traffic violations are equally dangerous no matter in what Member State they are committed. Young people face a disproportionately high risk to get killed in traffic. Nearly 10.000 young people die on our roads every year. Therefore, we warmly welcome efforts to make our roads safer and call on all European drivers to drive responsibly, no matter where they are.' Thursday, September 11, 2008 Summer School: Europe in Practice From the 25th to the 28th of August, LYMEC together with the European Liberal Forum (ELF) organized a Summer School on Europe in Practice in Brussels. The event was specifically for young people who were not so familiar with the EU yet. Over 30 participants from all across the European Union took part and got an inside view in the Union's decision making process. Using of the recently finished "Television without frontiers" directive as a case study, the Summer School examined the process from the viewpoints of different key players.Note: On the picture: Summer School participants at the European Parliament Friday, August 29, 2008 Economic slowdown: let's cut taxes and red tape Reacting to the economic slowdown in Europe, the European Liberal Youth (LYMEC) calls for economic reforms. For the first time ever since the introduction of the common currency, the gross domestic product (GDP) in the Eurozone fell last quarter. GDP declined by 0.2 percent in the euro area and by 0.1 percent in the EU27 compared with the previous quarter, according to Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Community. The Eurozone had previously never registered anything worse then zero growth.
LYMEC President Aloys Rigaut states: 'Economic growth is the precondition for the creation of jobs. Germany, France, Italy and many other strong economies in Europe are on the brink of recession. Therefore, we would be well advised to improve our competitiveness by pro-business reforms, cutting red tape and creating a better climate for investment. This can also include tax cuts, to ease the burden on consumers and companies alike. Especially the Eurozone countries have a common responsibility to act in concert to improve economic conditions. We therefore welcome the idea of the French presidency to put the economy on the agenda.'

Thursday, August 21, 2008 Georgia and Russia in war: call for immediate ceasefire European Liberal Youth (LYMEC) firmly condemns the war that has erupted between Georgia and Russia and urges both sides to cease fire and respect international law and civilians' rights.
Aloys Rigaut, President of LYMEC, commented: "We had hoped that after the Balkan war in the early 1990s, we would not see more wars of this type on our continent but unfortunately this is not the case. We are all deeply concerned about the situation, as much as about the future. Russia's military intervention outside the conflict zone of South Ossetia is a show of strength and a direct challenge to the European Union's and NATO's credibility. The urgency is to stop the hostilities and find back the path to negotiations and peace. However once this is over the EU will seriously need to rethink its relations with Russia. We need in particular to strengthen our relations with our closest neighbours, such as Ukraine and Georgia, as well as our security and defence policy. There is no grey zone here for Russia to expand".
Monday, August 11, 2008 LUF congress wants Europe to boycott the Olympic Games in China This weekend LUF Sweden had their annual congress in Rättvik. The congress re-elected Frida Johansson Metso as president. Mae Liz Orrego Rodriguez, former vice-president and international officer of LUF was elected LUF candidate for the European Parliament elections.
Frida Johannson Metso, President of Liberalt Ungdomforbund (LUF), used her opening speach at the congress to emphasise the organisations strong postition on the Olympic Games in China. In this matter LUF has been disagreeing with their mother party Folkpartiet. Frida Johannson Metso claimed at the congress: "I hope that we will see in the coming weeks a critical voice in China, and that the Olympic Games will be a critical propaganda event".Note: Picture - From the left: Frida Johannson Metso (President of LUF), Johanna Lønn (elected for the national board of LUF), Mette Lykke Nielsen (bureau member of LYMEC) and Mae Liz Orrego Rodriguez (candidate for European Parliament elections). Monday, August 11, 2008 World's Young Liberals debate about the human rights situation in China and the food crisis in Manila During the 24th to the 27th of July, the International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY) held its semiannual Executive Committee in the Philippines. The event was warmly hosted by IFLRY's long-standing member organization from Asia, the Young Liberals of the Philippines (Kalipi) and attended by many young liberals from all corners of the world, among which Aloys Rigaut, President of European Liberal Youth (LYMEC) and the Executive of the Young Liberals and Democrats of Asia (YLDA). This was IFLRY's first statutory event in the Philippines and the first event held in Asia since 2004. Tuesday, August 05, 2008 WTO Doha round talks collapse: agricultural protectionism once again to blame WTO talks aimed at striking a global free trade agreement to bring new wealth to rich and poor countries alike, known as the Doha round, collapsed this week once again. Even though the negotiations seemed to be going well well at first -agreements were reached on 18 out of 20 agenda points- the whole package faltered once talks focused on agriculture.
The European Liberal Youth (LYMEC) together with the International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY) deeply regret this new setback of the Doha round.
Reacting to the news, LYMEC President Aloys Rigaut stated: 'The failure of the Geneva talks deprives us of a win-win situation. Once more agricultural protectionism has stood in the way of a deal that would have benefited both the developed and the developing world. With global markets booming, it is high time to remove tariff barriers and quota systems and go for a global liberalisation of markets. This would benefit not only European farmers and consumers, but also bring new opportunities for their counterparts in developing countries.' Friday, August 01, 2008 Karadzic arrest brings relief to his victims and hope for Serbia's future The democratic world is today relieved by the news on the arrest of Radovan Karadzic, former Bosnian Serb wartime leader. Radovan Karadzic was the political leader of Bosnian Serb forces during the devastating war in 1990s. The troops under his command were responsible for numerous atrocities, including the massacre of over 8000 civilians in the town of Srebrenica and the four-year long siege of the capital city of Sarajevo - the longest and one of the most brutal sieges in the history of modern warfare.Note: Photo: Slobodan Milosevic and Radovan Karadzic Tuesday, July 22, 2008 Ukraine's future is in the European Union Yalta European Strategy (YES) international network, a non-government forum on the issues of Ukraine and the EU, held its 5th annual meeting in Yalta, Ukraine, on 10-13 July 2008. Over 160 politicians, public figures, businessmen, diplomats and journalists from more than 20 countries participated in the summit. Aloys Rigaut, President of European Liberal Youth (LYMEC), as well as the Presidents of YEPP (youth of EPP) and ECOSY (youth of PSE) were among the participants.
