Greenhaus Community Home what who where whence whither whatever Welcome to Greenhaus Community We're an intentional christian community located in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. Even though most of us have been "doing community" for over three four years now, we're still in the early learning stages in most regards. The purpose of this website is to connect to other community-minded Christians, and to fill the occasional vacancy. Hang around if you would like to find out more about us, or drop us a line if you're in the area and would like to come for a visit. God bless! News 4/19/2008 · Gathering of Boston Communities · People from communities all over Boston gathered to share a meal and some of our experiences living the Kingdom of God together. It's always a blast to see what God is doing and we hope to make this a regular event. 12/2007 · Advent Calendar 4.0 · The Department of Public Works seems to consider freezing December the best time for "salt and light", and we agree! For the fourth time, we are putting up our Advent Calendar, seeking to point our neighbors and passersby to the One through whom and for whom Greenhaus exists - Jesus Christ, the light of the world. The idea follows previous years: Every day of Advent leading up to Christmas, we are revealing a new piece of communal art, keeping with the themes of light and a progressive taking-shape that marked the coming of Christ. Here are some previews. 11/2007 · We have a Guest Room · For a couple of months, we have been busy trying to discern how to fulfill our Christian call to hospitality toward the stranger. Of course, we've always been open to our couch-surfing friends (some of whom are quite strange). But this would be for people we don't yet know. The result of that process is the guest room, available free of charge for people needing a temporary place to stay. Robert, a seminary student from out West attending a class at CUME, kindly agreed to serve as our guinea pig. We returned the favor by being guinea pigs for some of his ideas, but that's a longer story. We love you Rob, come back soon! 8/28/2007 · Farewell Nilda! · After scantily three months, the Greenhaus Grandma is called away to care for her family. After all, God has plans too, and they don't always line up with ours. Yet it's hard to overstate how much you have given us during your short stint. Gracia a te y paz de Dios nuestro Padre y del Seńor Jesucristo. 7/27/2007 · Welcome Kristen · As another "first" for Greenhaus: Having been a friend of the community from the beginning but not quite ready to move in with all of our (extremely well behaved) children, Kristen has bought a condo nearby and founded the (naming suggestions welcome) "Greenhaus Annex". Congratulations! We'll make your place a regular stop of our all-hands dinner circuit. 7/19/2007 · Farewell, Melody! · Your move to Georgia will be a net transfer of cheerfulness from the North to the South. Not fair! 6/2/2007 · Welcome, Ben · Oh no! A blogging seminarian! 6/2/2007 · Welcome, Soyon · 5/30/2007 · La revedere, Muresans! · Parting ways after journeying together is one of the downsides of community. After more than three years, "our" Romanians move out. And on. We'll miss them, but they've left us with a few memories. 5/13/2007 · Welcome Nilda! · Finally we have someone to expand our age spread at the top, and not at the bottom. Rumor has it that Nilda loves to cook. We'll have plenty of opportunity to find out ... 5/2/2007 · Bye bye, Laura · She takes a long one-way road trip down to Texas. Good luck with your new life! But where will we all now borrow our movies from? 2/14/2007 · Jessica writes short stories · Here's one of them. 2/10/2007 · Haus Concert · Tree by Leaf were in town and spiffed up our Saturday dinner with a Haus Concert. How cool is that? Garrett, Siiri, Cliff & Eric, you were awesome! Here are some pics. 2006 12/2006 · Advent Calendar the Third · This is how it looked like. 9/2/2006 · Welcome Melody! · Having been a long-time friend of our community, she's finally starting to sojourn among us. 9/2/2006 · Welcome Shannon! · Shannon is obviously excited to be moving in at 71. So are we! 9/2/2006 · Welcome Jessica! · She's bringing some previous community experience with her ... and a ton of books. Seriously. 8/31/2006 · Bye bye, Vikings! · Thanks for sharing in our journey for the last two years. What a ride it's been! You will be missed. 8/5/2006 · The Making of a Deck · We finally rolled up our sleeves to convert the awkward "trench" behind our house into a deck. Thanks to everyone who helped to make it happen! May 2006 · Strength in Numbers · From left to right: Elias, Elias, and Elias 4/21/2006 · Welcome Andre · That "growth" thing again ... Congrats Alicia & Mau! 2005 12/26/2005 · Welcome Elias · We're continuing to add to what must now be the biggest collection of "Eliases" under one roof in Boston. Here comes number three. Congrats Melanie & Gisle! December 2005 · Advent Calendar 2.0 · Since we're desperate for traditions, how 'bout another one? Here's how this year's advent calendar looked like. In case you haven't already, you should check out the 2004 version as well. 10/15/2005 · OpenHaus 2.0 · Trying to establish a tradition, we opened our doors again for the 2nd Annual OpenHaus for a "jolly good time of fun, good company, and giving thanks for God's provision." No hayrides this year, but an obstacle course and live music. Even though the weather did everything to keep the guests away, about 70 came anyway. Thanks, and see you next year! 8/31/2005 · We've got Mark · He decided in the afternoon that he was going to move in at 10pm. Welcome! 8/1/2005 · Fare thee well, Kelly · May the Lord always be with you. 7/7/2005 · Welcome, Alicia & Amaury · Fortunately, they're travelling light. No new sofas! 6/30/2005 · Vaya con dios, Joanna & Nate · After a year at Greenhaus, they're striking out on their own again. 5/23/2005 · A new look · After months of neglect, our website has been remodeled for your viewing pleasure. This is how it looked before. 2004 December 2004 · Advent Calendar 1.0 · Since we live on a street busy with pedestrians, we thought about a way to reclaim the Christmas season from the throes of commercialism. What we came up with is a communal work of art that takes shape progressively throughout the advent season, pointing (so we hope) to the miracle of Christ's incarnation. 10/23/2004 · 1st Annual OpenHaus · We opened our doors to our neighbors and friends for an afternoon of "fun, music, free food and hayrides". 9/13/2004 · Welcome Sofia · Ilyusha is a big brother! Thinking about "internal growth" again: Do three really make a trend? Only time will tell. Check this space for updates ... 8/28/2004 · Dedication · After being "full" for a few weeks, we held a simple service to dedicate our place to the purpose God has called us to. Thanks to all the friends who came to support us with prayer, encouragement and exhortation. 6/19/2004 · Welcome Joanna & Nate · They help keeping the sofa/inhabitant ratio of 73 around 1. 6/5/2004 · 73 springs to life · The colony at 73 Green is getting its first permanent settlers. Welcome Melanie & Gisle! 5/22/2004 · Welcome Laura (and bye) · Laura's sofa is the first sign of life in 73 Green St. You might be able to spot it here. Laura will be joining us in August after spending her summer elsewhere. 2/20/2004 · Welcome Joshua · he displaces Naomi as the junior kidlet in town. 2/14/2004 · Bun venit Elias, Oxana, Ruben · They come from far away and are said to have a musical vein. 71 Green St is now officially full and we're looking forward to 73 opening up soon. 1/11/2004 · Welcome Naomi · It's called "internal growth"; born bright and early on a brutally cold, sunny Sunday morning, Naomi will enjoy the distinction of being the youngest Greenhaus member for about a month. Here's a picture and the announcement card. 1/7/2004 · Welcome Kelly · Kelly shleps his wares into 71 Green St, turning a one-family dwelling into an actual community home. 2003 12/15/2003 · We've got website · It's still a little rough around the edges and will probably never be completely finished, but it's a start. 12/6/2003 · A U-Haul in the snowstorm · After years of praying, things 'fall into place' with remarkable precision, and Daniela & Joel move into the newly renovated 71 Green St, marking the official kickoff for Greenhaus. The occasion will forever be remembered for the two feet of snow that tested the loyalty and resolve of the volunteers. Thanks! late 2003 · In the beginning · Through circumstances that are quite miraculous and not yet fully understood, God makes it possible to purchase and renovate the properties of 71 and 73 Green St. In this section: who we are who we want to be we want you where we are links & resources contact guestbook |
