BET special, “Locked Out,” to highlight disenfranchisement
In “Locked Out: Ex-Cons and the Vote,” BET News correspondent Samson Styles investigates how disenfranchisement laws affect African-American turnout at the polls. As one of the 5.3 million people in America who has lost the right to vote due to a criminal conviction, Styles sets out on a journey to regain his own voting rights, explore the state-to-state differences of disfranchisement laws, and investigate the national effects of such legislature. "Locked Out: Ex-Cons and the Vote" airs Friday at 11:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Crack and powder: They're equally criminal, so equalizing sentencing is fair
Since April, hundreds of Virginia inmates have had their crack cocaine-related sentences reduced since the U.S. Sentencing Commission made its decision to apply adjustments to the sentencing guidelines for crack cocaine offenses. "It's just a start, really,” states a Daily Press editorial. “It's about time the federal justice system caught up with Virginia's system, in which crack offenses are treated equally with those for cocaine … undoing this unequal treatment of equal crimes is the right move.”

Panel reviews law that charges 17 year olds as adults
The Wisconsin Legislative Council's Special Committee on High-Risk Juvenile Offenders is reviewing whether to change a state law which automatically sends all 17 year olds who commit minor offenses through the adult court system. Further, the law states that juveniles who commit a felony offense receive an automatic waiver into adult court. Two recent studies by the Wisconsin Council on Children and Families and the U.S. Department of Justice have called juvenile waiver to adult court a failed experiment.

The Case for Juvenile Courts
“This country made a terrible mistake when it began routinely trying youthful offenders as adults. This get-tough approach was supposed to deter crime,” states a New York Times editorial. But a growing number of government-financed studies have shown that minors prosecuted as adults commit more crimes — and are more likely to become career criminals – than ones processed through juvenile courts.” The editorial continues on to say that youth don't receive necessary counseling and family support while incarcerated in adult facilities. Lawmakers must eliminate these “counterproductive policies,” the editorial recommends.
