YWCA VOTE - Your Voice, Your Vote, Your Future Why is this election so important? Elected officials make major decisions that impact the lives of women, girls and people of color. They include city council members, city and town mayors, state Governors, state senators and representatives, United States Senators and United States Representatives and the President and Vice President of the United States. These women and men: create the laws that impact every aspect of voters’ lives; from working to prevent and end violence against women, to increasing the minimum wage to protecting the right to vote. vote for or against proposals and legislation that impacts women, girls and people of color. decide if and how to respond to city, state, national and international issues including the lack of affordable health care, economic downturn, housing foreclosures, and immigration reform; and decide if and how to respond to city, state, national and international crises such as earthquakes, hurricanes, flooding, and terrorism Every election voters have a choice: A choice on who to elect to positions of power A choice on who to elect to be involved in discussions and decisions regarding direction of local, state, national and international policy and action. A choice on who to elect to be involved in discussions and decisions that shape the future of our families, communities and nation. This year the choice is even more important. When voters go to the polls, they will be casting their ballots for elected officials who will be involved in deciding what is done about major issues facing the country including• Health Care • Medicaid• Medicare• Social Security• Economy • Housing foreclosures• Lack of affordable housing• Rising costs of college• Energy policy • Immigration Reform• Taxes• Terrorism• War in Iraq Voting is one of the most important activities individuals can engage. Who an individual votes for can have an enormous impact on the lives of women, girls and people of color in the United States and throughout the world. This is especially true this year. Some people believe that voting is not important or does not matter. But the old cliché is true; one vote can make a difference. YWCA USA to Sponsor 2008 Presidential Debates Washington, DC – The YWCA, the nation’s oldest and largest women’s organization, will mark another milestone in its 150 year history by becoming a national sponsor of the upcoming 2008 presidential debates. The debates are organized by the Commission on Presidential Debates. There will be three debates for the presidential nominees and one for the vice-presidential nominees. First presidential debate: Friday, September 26 University of Mississippi, Oxford, MS Vice presidential debate: Thursday, October 2 Washington University, St. Louis, MO Second presidential debate: Tuesday, October 7 Belmont University, Nashville, TN Third presidential debate: Wednesday, October 15 Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY “With so many critical issues at stake in this election that impact women and their families, the aim of local YWCA’s nationwide is to be a resource for voter education and empowerment,” said Lorraine Cole, PhD, YWCA USA’s CEO. “Next to actually voting, viewing the presidential and vice presidential debates is one of the most important ways for Americans to engage in the election process. By sponsoring these debates, the YWCA will be helping to enlighten Americans as they cast their votes in this landmark election.” The nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) was established in 1987 to ensure that debates, as a permanent part of every general election, provide the best possible information to viewers and listeners. “The CPD is honored to have the support and involvement of the YWCA in the 2008 presidential debates and looks forward to working together on these historic events,” said executive director Janet Brown. The CPD sponsored all the presidential debates in 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004. For more information, go to www.debates.org. To find out everything you need to know go to the YWCA national website www.ywcavote.org. Remember all the suffragists who truly suffered almost unmentionable treatment to make sure women gained the right to vote in 1920. You NEED to get out and vote and use this right that was so hard fought by these very courageous women. History is being made!
